Permalink Quilter MicroPro 200 GA Head and Cabinets?

New Topic

Hey folks,

have someone of you tried out the Quilter MicroPro 200 GA Head with different cabinets?

The original matching cabinet comes with a Celestion Classic Lead 80 Speaker. I'm considering to use a EV 12 L Speaker, JBL D120F Sepaker or the Peavey 1201 Speaker(Guitar Version).

Has anyone experiences with some of the combinations? Or tried the one with the matching cabinet?

I'd get in touch with Chris Parks at Quilter. 714-519-6114 or at info@quilterlabs.com. They've tested that amp with everything under the sun, and could surely advise you. He also might be able to put you in touch with somebody doing what you're trying to do. For low volume applications, I've run a 1x12 extension cabinet with a 30w Celestian G12H in it. Also a 4x10 Reverend Cabinet. It sounds great with either. You've got to be careful with the volume though. The 200w that the MicroPro puts out will fry under-rated speakers if you're playing with the volume up. I'd never be able to safely use my 1x12 30w cabinet for high volume applications.

I just loaded my Quilter ext. cab. with a Weber California 12. It sounds HUGE! I had a Vintage 30 for a while, sounded OK, but not real surfy. The OEM Celestion is pretty good, and can take the power. I have the MicroPro 8, and use both speakers, so I don't really worry about blowing stuff up. Can't turn it up past halfway anyway!

Dep't of FWIW: They don't put any insulation in the cab's. I've been experimenting with using some, and kind of like it better with rather than without. YMMV.

Ought to mention these are built from 400 WATT Class D amps. I believe they can transient spike at 300 WATTS on a channel at full volume, so watch them speakers!

This is Noel. Reverb's at maximum an' I'm givin' 'er all she's got.

The Surge! boys met up with Pat Quilter at the Pomona Vintage Guitar Show when were out there in July. Fine fellow. We put his new amps through the paces and we were really impressed.

Maybe if I talk to Santa Claus real nice......................

Amazing litter critters especially when you add that ext cab, Thirty thumbs up! (Those Surge! guys are pretty much all thumbs).

Traditional........speak softly and play through a big blonde amp. Did I mention that I still like big blonde amps?

Hey LaMan..........be real careful with those 1201's thay sound fabulous but they have a weak point where the flying leads tie into the voice coil. A goodly number of them have suffered that fate and there ain't no original parts left.

I bought up several to get enough of the 8 ohm ones for future parts.

They will lay waste to a D-120 which is exactly what Hartley had in mind when he hired JBL's head musical instrument speaker engineer.

Interesting, guys! thanks for the input! I also contacted Quilter but they didn't really respond to the question. They said that the Quilter Amp will let any speaker sound better than you ever heard before! Impressive... Big Grin

I think I will go with the EV 12 L at the moment. Anyone tried it with these?

Yes, I use an EV SRO 12 (the newer ceramic one, not the old coffee can ones) and I'd guess it's quite similar to the 12L's. I like the sound just fine. I have the original 8" amp, but I've tried it with the internal speaker disconnected, so theoretically it should be the same as the head. The beauty of getting the head is you're free to try different speakers. However, I still recommend getting the combo. I put it on top of my extension speaker and point the amp at the other band members while my ext. speaker faces the audience. Instant stage monitor.
