Anyone played one of these? Does it sound any different than a Strat?

Burns Cobra

Sean

Well, I did find this...

Pro Guitar Shop video

Sean

Yes, I have played a Cobra. It is a Strat on Steroids. No frail sounds here, this dude is front and center. I have 3 Burns Marquees, which are the Cobra's "big brothers" and they are my favorites. The Marquees have Burns Res-O-Matic pickups and the Cobra has the Tri-Sonics, which to me sound more edgy and twangy. The Cobra isn't quite as gaudy as the Marguee..no scrolled headstock and silver rather than gold hardware. But it's a kick ass guitar for cheap. Excellent build quality and a wonderful neck. The sound clip from Proguitarshop is pretty accurate to the way my Marquees sound doing "That Song by Love...7 & 7 is?" And you get a push/pull pot to blend the neck and bridge pickups. Psuedo Jazzmaster tones. Great for surf, Shadows and anything else. Proguitarshop has these on eBay in Guards Red, Shadows White and Islington Blue. $449 OBO shipped. Hint...they will go $400 or less shipped. Try it. You'll like it. PM me if you want more of a data dump. Big Grin

Thanks for the info. Hopefully they'll have more of the white ones in stock by the time I have the funds.

I had a Marquee for a while, before they switched to the cheaper Strat-like trem. I must say it was a great guitar, both build and soundwise. In the end, it was way too heavy-and I mean heavier than any LP I've played. I don't think this is the case with all of them. Jimmy Wilsey said he has one that's nice and light.

Here's a review I found.

I definitely want one. Was considering a Squier Jag, but this seems like a cool option.

I played my friends' Cobra again last night and took a good look at the build quality as well. The neck joint is as tight and clean as any I've seen, the finish is great (Shadows White) and all the hardware works like it should. Little if any 60 cycle hum. The Tri-Sonics sound more balanced than the Rez-O-Matics on my Marquees. Supposedly, with the Tri-Sonics you don't have to raise or lower one end of the pickup to balance the high and low string output. They come set up that way and it works. And the aesthetics, the 3 piece "scratch plate" and that big BatWing headstock are cool! Controls are the same as the Marquee with the push/pull blend pot, except that with the Marquee the bridge PU is connected to the tone control. On the Cobra, it is not.

Great guitars. Not just for the price...just plain great guitars. The quality puts the VM Squiers to shame (at least the POS that I got and returned the next day). Plus, you'll be playing something that sounds great, looks cool and is different!

My friend got his here. $416.50 with free shipping. He said they were great to work with, kept him informed of progress and sent an e-mail to assure he was satisfied. They claim to have the Shads White one in stock.

+1 for Burns. I've never played a Cobra (or even seen one in person), but I own an Apache Dream. Got it for the Rez-O-Tube vibrato, which I really like, and everything else is great too. Had it about 6 months and it has become my favorite solid body.

Thanks for the update. Saw a seller on eBay selling them for $389, but they didn't have white.

Now I just need my multieffects pedal and drum set to sell already. Definitely jonesing for one of these given all the positive comments.

Sean

Thanks for the Birdland Music link. I've never heard of them before and it looks like they carry a bunch of stuff that is harder to get in the US

Btw...how much do the Cobras weigh? Are they comparable to an average Strat weight? The Marquees are deceptive because, until you set one next to a Strat, you'd think they're the same size.
