Permalink Good amp for gain and fuzz?

New Topic

Hello everyone! Wich one of the Fender amps is better for fuzz or medium distortion?

For recording & practice (small gig ?) the very affordable Fender "Frontman 25 R" has a decent overdrive (plus a line out & a plug in for a CD player which is somewhat useful). For any other purposes the "Fender Princeton Chorus" has an unbelievably good overdrive channel, I mean REALLY good & VERY convincing...MUCH better than the earlier "Schultz era" amps (although Fender came along quite nicely under him......my favorite Fender's), this Princeton Chorus really delivers great overdrive....possibly the best solid state Fender has ever come up with.....they surf pretty good as well. The later "black knob" models seem to be REALLY good....I have 2 & run em' together & the overdrive/gain is very good.

Now i see on guitarcenter.com black knobs version. Description says 125 watts, 2x10 dinamics. This is it? And what do you think about Fender Frontman 212R?

The Princeton Chorus has 2x10'' speakers. I think Noel (on this site) has a Frontman 212R so you may want to send him a personal mail & ask. I only played thru one once & it was really good sounding ! (I got the 25R). If you're in a band & want to keep up w/a Fender Twin Reverb, you can do it with room to spare w/a Frontman 212R. If I were in a band I'd get one cos' they're affordable, sound good & they are LOUD !!

Thank you so much! I'll ask Noel. I always think the SS amps is better for me. I used to play on solid state Randall w/spring reverb. It was good but not enuoght to play with a band.

I actually have a Stage 112SE. It's a real killer for surf. Has a terrific reverb pan that does everything but drip, but it creates a real heavy splashy reverb. The Frontman 212R has a week reverb but there's a good fix for it somewhere on here. It also sounds a little thinner but pushes a lot of air with 2 12's instead of only one. Somewhere out there are some Stage 212SEs that would be very interesting. I bought mine because it sounded so much better than the Frontman. Maybe I just havea good one.

This is Noel. Reverb's at maximum an' I'm givin' 'er all she's got.

i have a fender frontman 212r... it is amazing. Say what you will, but...

built solid, never failed me in the few years i've had it. i hate modeling amps with chips, but yes.. i know this is the same thing with just one amp programmed in there. but they have really done a good job dialing in the FENDER sound.

clean channel -vol, bass, treble, mid. step on a switch and you have the same set of controls plus a drive control. For years... since they were introduced in the 80s, i've never got a nice balance between a clean and a distorted sound. this does it.. the same tone, same volume with a nudge in drive.

but then, you can step on the MORE drive, which adds a preset amount of additional distortion to the drive. that extra boost.

then there's reverb that works in both channels. effects loop. be sure to ALWAYS used a speaker-type cable for the foot switch, not a guitar cable.

and it's LOUD. you can also swap out the tank for better reverb.

So i also vote to check out the 25r.. i'd like find one used as the 212r is too big for most home practice.

Thanks guys! I think if i want to use Frontman212 with pedals and reverb unit, it will be good for my sound preferences. Smile

I have a frontman 212r, I've made a few mods : TAD reverb tank, high quality rca cable and 2 Celestion rockdriver speakers, it costs me less than 120 euros. The amp is now loud, stays clean and got a nice drippy reverb.

Thanks poisonmanu! I listen your myspace staff and have some questions: 1) what pickups do you use? 2) do you use stomboxes or combo gain?

I don't have the need for a 2 12 so i can't provide personal experience, but I've heard nothing but good things about the Frontman 212R.

i bought one of those frontman's before i had my Showman cause i needed something louder than my old VOX Valvetronix. we practiced for 15 minutes, amp started to distort and then crapped out on me and wouldn't turn on anymore. i returned it right after got my money back and later on bought a showman. Maybe you should save your money and get something a little better than the Frontman, i learned the hard way that buying the affordable stuff ends up being more expensive in the end. There's tons of threads about amps and they're pros and cons on the forum, you should definitely try to get comfortable with the search function above. if i had the money id personally get a brownface Bandmaster, they overdrive naturally pretty well and work good with Fuzz. Just listen to any of Garret Immel's Ghastly ones Recordings, That to me is one of the best Sounds in instrumental music. just my 2 cents

"Eminence recommends the Legend 1258 Guitar Speaker as a direct replacement in the Basson B412 cabinet, and the Fender FM212R, Fender Blues Reissue, Fender Blues Junior, and the Behringer V-Tone Gmx212 combo amplifiers." - from guitarcenter.com description.
