On a lot of classic era surf records, you can hear that the mutes on the Fender basses are still in - little foam rubber strips glued to the underside of the bridge cover. Anybody still play with the mutes on?

Carol Kaye still likes the foam mute approach. I use the heel of the attack hand while picking to mute. |

You should hook up with Stormtiger. His band posted on the Ventura County Craigslist looking for a bass player. They do it up right!! —You're not drunk if you can put your socks on while standing. |

Good idea Stokemon, and thanks. In fact we already connected and I sent him here. Our excellent bassist Scott is moving away. |

My last stint on bass was with a blues/power trio about 15 years ago. I still haven't put the chrome covers back on my P-Bass. |

Another vote for Bosco from the Atlantics; he had a really innovative style of playing, especially for that era. The Bass line on "Bombora" could have just about been considered punk in 1963; he also did some interesting double-stop stuff on "Come On". This is one of their lesser known songs, but it's one of my favorites of Bosco's bass lines. Last edited: Feb 18, 2012 07:18:04 |

I'm looking for the exact transcription (or notes) for the awesome "rumble" (LINK WRAY) I'm a guitarist and can do the riffs but I'm always in trouble for the bass part. Any help? in advance thanx! Fred —http://www.reverbnation.com/c./a4/2404628/1132668/Artist/1132668/Artist/link |

Right on DP! I don't play bass all that often anymore but when I did that was pretty much how I tried to do things. A few weeks ago I played bass at a jam session and had the good fortune to work with a drummer that I found it easy to work with. We quickly linked up and worked as a team. It was a very nice feeling to be able to be a part of that. —The artist formerly known as: Synchro When Surf Guitar is outlawed only outlaws will play Surf Guitar. |

Do many of you bassists out there use hollowbodies? Our bassist uses a Vox Apollo sunburst hollowbody bass with black nylon strings. We've tried to interest him in a Fender, but he won't give up the Vox. Likes the sound and playability, so I guess to each his own. I was just curious as to whether it was all solidbody Fenders out there? —How's your digestion now? |

Scott Esbeck from the Straijackets told me he used a hollow body Kay Bass on the original recording of University Blvd, I assume it was on the whole album since the tone seems the same throughout. He used a Fender Jazz for live work, except when they were sponsored by Squier. I can still recall them playing those white Squiers at Twist-n-shout here in Maryland. I'm a Fender type myself, love the tones you get and they're reasonably comfy to play |

I'd just like to mention what a great job Ron Eglit did with Dick Dale over the past 20- years or so....he was right there for DDs whole resurgance and new albums and popularity..they had some great bass/guitar interplay and he knew when to GTF out of the way too. |

Will most tube heads like showmaster, bandmaster etc do OK as bass amps as well? |

New member of the Surf community! Great to find this thread!!! Anyways, I'm in a fledgling Surf/Elecki band called 'Crazy Aces'. We've just recorded a record of originals & put together a video of sorts for one of the songs. Hope you guys dig it! —Crazy Aces on facebook Last edited: Sep 10, 2012 09:23:39 |

I dig it! you guys sound great. Album: When and where is it available? I am a bass player first playing in a standard cover band Psycho Sushi (Seattle area) DeadSurf60's just had their first gig and got a request to play another one. I guess the crowd didn't hear the profusion of mistakes I made up on stage! RobC |
