Permalink Astronauts drum beat

New Topic
Goto Page: Previous 1 2

This beat really gave me fits when Ivan suggested using it for a new song "Surf Fidelis." You kind of need to forget everything you know about the standard surf beat in order to master it. I found the trickiest part was smoothing it out around fills. The Astronauts drummer (sorry I don't know his name) used very jazz/swing fills along with this beat and, needless to say, they are difficult to immulate AND keep the beat smooth goign into and coming out of the fills.

This could explain why this beat is not used so often. It's just so darn difficult.

That's exactly the problem our drummer in the Daytonas had with it. Especially coming out of the fills and starting the beat again without losing the flow.

Slacktone can pretty much do what they want and it will sound good given the caliber of musicianship in the band. Notwithstanding Slacktone, i would think the song might sound hollow if the Astronauts drumbeat were used in a trio format. To me, the effectiveness of that beat in the song is predicated on the 8th note guitar chunk on the rhythm guitar which pretty much dominates the rhythm section. if you played the song with that beat, the bass and standard melody line on the guitar....something would definitely be missing. To play an Astronauts song effectively, you need at least 4 people (5 is even better) or you need to be Slacktone!

TFJ, ferenc was joining them so there was backing guitar. there's this cool point in the video where Dusty just goes crazy and him and Ferenc exchange thes "hell yeah" looks - cool to watch.

you're right though, slacktone can get away with anything. Worship

gave The Hearse a listen last night. I thought it was a pretty strong melody with or without the astronauts signature beat. nice sort of melancholy vibe to it. Like it's your 86 year old granny in the coffin, not your 28 year lover.

Wow. Just read this over. glossed over it the first time. SG 101 just keeps giving. Props to WR for keepin' it real!

I believe Gallagher said at the CMHF induction - afterwards in the lobby to uncomprehending me - that his left hand is (was) following Fifield. He liked to play standing or sitting on a higher stool than usual he mentioned during the induction.
