Permalink Removing Jazzmaster collet...

New Topic
Page 1 of 1

So, I bought a Staytrem replacement collet + arm for my AVRI '62 Jazzmaster, as the stock collet has become so worn the arm flops about and I wanted a 'proper' solution rather than zip-ties/bending collet teeth etc. However, try as I might, I cannot remove the stock collet. Seems to be jammed solid. Using a good quality heavy-duty adjustable wrench and it absolutely won't budge. Thoughts?

Soaking in WD-40 overnight;
Even heavier wrench/longer handle;
If the old collet is disposable, you can freely abuse it, the connection will fatigue eventually, just be careful with the other metal parts.

You might try banging on the metal a bit. This will make it expand a bit. Works on jar lids.

Might have to try soaking it, just had it in the vice smacking the wrench with a hammer, and it still won't budge!

One other thought: try a box end wrench. Sometimes the adjustable type will flatten the part and and to the difficulty level.If that part has loctite on it, heat will help loosen it.

Could someone please explain this "zip tie" method? I've tried masking tape and can't get it to work.

Cats 'n' Strats, 'cause that's how I roll - I eat reverb for breakfast!

I'll dig out a box-end wrench and give that a go tomorrow. Looking closely at the assembly, it seems the collet was tightened with a lot of force at the factory - the nut has actually ground a circle into the metal plate to which it is attached it has been screwed in that hard.

Incidentally, does anyone know where I might source the metal plate that attaches to the underside of the floating trem plate that the strings go through? Angela's has the floating plate but not the secondary plate that attaches to it's underside - if I can't shift this collet, I'd settle for a new floating plate and underside plate (It'd have to be USA model, the thread on my replacement collet is sized for it)
