Here's a tip for learning where the notes are on the fingerboard.

When you pick up your guitar choose a note, say A, and then find all the 'A' notes on the guitar. My strat has 11.

Do this with a different note each time you pick the guitar up, it doesn't take very long to do..

good luck
Martin

Not that I am a great bass player by any stretch of the imagination.
But when I got my bass, the first thing I did was make a map of the neck,
and all the notes of it.

I may not be able to tell you the notes in certain scales,
but if somebody says play a C# I know where it is.

Jeff, that reminded me of a story. When Paul Simonon joined the clash, he didn't know how to play bass, so Mick Jones painted the note names on the fretboard. Paul turned out to be a pretty damn great bass player.

I checked my Strat. It has 11 too. ;)
Good tip, Martin. Also, notice they form a pattern across and along the fretboard allowing you to find any note quickly once you learn to visualize the patterns.

There are these Fretlight guitars with an onboard chip and LEDs embedded in the fretboard that light up to indicate notes, scales and chords. I know purists say there's nothing like learning the old-fashioned way, but I think I would have learned much faster if I had started on such a guitar. Who am I kidding, I'm sure even now it could help my playing a lot. If they weren't so overpriced I'd pick one up just out of curiosity.

Old punks never die... They just become surf rockers.
