He hasn't posted any new reviews in many months. I guess he's just taking a break.

He was at KFJC a few weeks ago for El Ray and Los Venturas. He keeps busy.

I let him know by email what I am doing with the Reverb Hour and always invite him to live mics. He is very involved with rescue of raccoons, is still working, and so on. It appears to me that he continues to love surf music but that other things are higher priority for him these days.

I asked him at KFJC, "what I had to do to get him to come to a
SG101 convention"?
I asked him, "how good of a line up do I have to book"?
He said that "they all have been good,
but the last 2 have really tempted him".
Guess I have to keep upping the ante.

Jeff,
Get Martin and the Atlantics to headline next year's convention. If that is not tempting enough, I don't know what is.

Talk to you later,
Norm

funny you mention that, I just e-mailed Martin about that this morning.

Jeff(bigtikidude)

Time is going by way too fast. A month slips by and I haven't written any reviews... lots of reasons... it's orphan raccoon season (currently five boys in tow), speeder runs, the goats, very busy at work, etc... but it's also just getting much harder to find the time.

Reverb Central has been on line since early 1994. I have a bunch of reviews to go up in a few days, and I'll post more in the coming months, but I will suspend new reviews by end of year and leave the site up in archive mode.

There are over a thousand reviews in the pending basket, and the list just grows beyond any reasonable hope of getting it caught up. So many bands now, and all the vintage singles I just haven't gotten to yet!

It's a lot like the end of my show on KFJC... a long run with lots to be proud of and many new friends made, but forums like this and blogs are more effective these days.

So, I guess this is as good a time and place as any to post the news. reverb Central is winding down, destined to enter into the history category. The reality is that my mission has long since been accomplished. I just wanted to keep surf music in the public ear... time was it was not at all certain there would be another band... but now, they are everywhere.

Thanks to all who have submitted sounds and graciously accepted by perspective. I'll occasionally drop in to do sound or just hang at KFJC, and there will be occasional shows too.

Special thanks to those who played live at KFJC and let me record. What a privilege! An one person above all others requires thanks... Ferenc Dobronyi, who provided art for the many KFJC surf CD's, and who dragged many band into the pit, and who brought the Surf Coasters to us all. I am grateful to call him my friend.

Kick the reverb, lads and lasses!

I am sorry t hear that. I have been a visitor of your site for a very long time. I want to thank you for all you have done. I understand time moves on and every gig has to end. Just the same, you will be missed. Thanks again for all your work. Your efforts did not go unappreciated.

Talk to you later,
Norm

I'm sorry to hear that too. Reverb Central has always been a reference database for me since I actively got into surf music...

Thanks a lot for the good work. Phil, I'll keep sending you our CD's just for the pleasure of your ears !

Wow, Phil Dirt, I'm sorry to hear this. The genre is certainly healthier now, but real reviews are hard to find. Lucky racoons! It's been a great run, many thanks, and many Swami bows!

This just makes me even more grateful that I got a chance to meet and greet you at KFJC last month, Phil. There's absolutely no doubt that when we (El Ray) started out in 2001, Reverb Central and KJFC helped us getting some attention locally as well as booking shows. To be able to tell people that we got a positive US review and got played on a US college radio was genius. Thanks!

If racoons are your new found passion and calling, I completely agree with Ferenc. Lucky racoons.

Phil has been the heartbeat of surf music for a lot of years by promoting and keeping the genre alive a lot longer than it otherwise might have.

Thanks, Phil for doing what you have done to provide the inertia to keep surf and instrumental rock viable. There are many, many bands, current and former, that owe you a huge debt of gratitude.

Best wishes in your new endeavors. Cool

Storm Surge of Reverb: Surf & Instro Radio

Phil and Reverb Central was my first source of information about the 3rd wave of surf. I remember sending him our first release, The Man From S.U.R.F, to review is 1997. I was so nervous waiting for his review, and so relieved when he liked it. We had no idea how we would fare as a little ol' surf band from Nova Scotia.

Since then he has gone on to master 2 of our albums, has been super supportive, and super kind. I'll miss Reverb Central, but there's still a tonne of reviews for me to go through on the site. Thanks so much for all you have contributed Phil, and hopefully we'll meet face to face some day!

Thanks for all your work Phil! Like many fans, your website was invaluable to me when I discovered surf music. As well as your radio show! All the best.

Phil, the worldwide surf community owes you such a huge debt! I'd probably be listening only to the most common first wave stuff, if not for you. Your radio broadcasts and Reverb Central were invaluable to me in educating me on traditional surf, progressive surf, and beyond. Thank you!

Best wishes,

Bob

Thanks. Reverb Central was one of the key resources in helping build my instrumental surf music collection. RC will be this great giant database repository I predict will be utilized for a long-time.

Phil is a fun guy, we met him last month at KFJC and did a nice chat with him. He was telling us about his hobby with this little rail wagons. He rides them with friends on unused/abandoned rail tracks and it seems quite a fun thing to do.

Here is a photo of Phil (Aug 4 KFJC)
