Have all the chords figured out for Malibu Run. Now starting w/lead guitar.
But with intro, rhythm guitar starts with Bminor for 8 beats and the next 8 beats, lead guitar comes in with this off-beat chord. Does anybody know what this. Driving me crazy. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Isn't the song in C minor? sounds like he's playing a C minor triad at the 8 th fret across the first three strings, but that he's slightly out of tune, or his intonation is off.

This will be very interesting. I've been struggling with this chord as well and finally gave up. Think it's 2 tones on B and E with a slight bend or something.

if you watch Banned From The Beach's Killer version of "Malibu Run," you can see the fabulous Billy playing rhythm and clearly it's B minor! But hard to see what Rob on lead is doing for the beginning!

Well, your title for this post clearly says Fender iv, not Banned from the Beach. Unless I'm completely insane, or my tuner is really out of whack, this is in C minor:

Part of the fun of figuring out 60's surf recordings is dealing with the tape being sped up / slowed down, tuning / intonation issues, and other anomalies. Randy Holden also stated in an interview with us that he tuned down to D, although it isn't clear if he meant Drop D, or how often he did so.

Tried it again and came to the result (and yes, it's C not B):
--15--15----15----15\--
--16--16----16----16\--
--17--17----17----17\--
-----------------------
-----------------------
-----------------------
Plus the guitar is slightly out of tune. Not sure about the slide, though. I'm pretty sure it's played like this.
@Brian: I'm sure you know this, but it's impossible to tab something out correctly, as 3x - is 3x
Is there a trick?

I think you may be right about 15 16 17. He's definitely out of tune.
Anyone else ever notice the slight Ska influence in the Fender IV?

psychonaut...you're absolutely correct with Fender IV's version in C minor. My bad for not mentioning it. I see alot of bands (on youtube) play it in B minor I think.

Yes: type or paste in your tab. Then select all lines with your mouse, then click the "Code block" icon (to the left of the smiley on the bar above the input box). That will shift all the lines 8 spaces or so to the right, which generates a "code block" (a block of text using a non-proportional font).
For example:
-15---15-----15----15slide-
-16---16-----16----16slide-
-17---17-----17----17slide-

If Randy Holden was indeed tuned to D, that means he's playing it as if it were in D minor. Yeah, then there's the 'is the recording sped up or slowed down' thing. Let's remember too that cheap electronic tuners weren't around back then. People mostly tuned by ear giving everyone a unique and personal temperance to their instruments. This accounts for a lot of the "sound" on sixties and earlier records. This is something which is all but lost in the modern age. Although I use a tuner live in order to minimize any potential problems, I always tune by ear when I record.

Okay, that was easy and kind of embarrassing for me. Thanks for your help!

Dropped to D he had to play it like this:
--17--17----17----17\--
--18--18----18----18\--
--19--19----19----19\--
-----------------------
-----------------------
-----------------------
And now it makes perfect sense. I suppose his guitar didn't have a perfect intonation and you are very likely to bend the strings slightly up there when you pull that chord. Add the 'loose' strings due to dropped tuning and tah-dah...that's what we hear.

Yeah. Malibu Run is another one of those surf tunes that sort of have their own key. Like Cminor and 1/2. Lol. We threw it in Bm to make life easier.

We asked him about that too... he gave us very brief answers with not a lot of detail in them unfortunately. Here is the interview:

And here are some more great stories from the Cowabunga list days:

Ok, I finally managed to cobble a tab for Malibu Run together (Lead and Rhythm guitar). My Tab is in B minor and standard tuning ... uploading it to the tab-section right now.
