Why can't I figure out this song? Why won't my damn fingers do what I'm asking them to do at the twelfth and lower frets? Confound it!

Sean

This might help

Fun tune to play!

This is one of the most terrible songs you can play! I really love the song and think of myself as an experienced player, but it really gives me the creeps. Like you said, the fingers simply won't do what they are supposed to do + the very sloppy timing Dick has in this song makes it almost impossible to make it sound good. Need tabs?

The Hicadoolas

It really helps if you hold a barre chord shape, BUT, finger it using your thumb to fret the 6th string (over the top of the neck) 3rd finger on the 5th string, 4th finger 4th string,2nd finger 3rd string, and 1st finger barring across the first and second strings. You can leave the thumb out of the equation since it isn't used. Or, you could just hold the first and second fingers on the top three strings and alternate playing the 3rd and 4th strings with your third finger. The spacing is kind of tight at the 12th fret, so it might help to practice this in a lower position, say at the 5th fret until you get the hang of it.
I generally like this chord fingering because it frees up your pinky to play other notes. This is often referred to as the "Hendrix grip"
Looks like this:

The main thing though is practice, practice, practice!

Thanks for the responses. I do have the tab from the Dick Dale book, but damn, it still is hard as hell trying to get my fingers to go where they are supposed to. I will try out Psychonaut's helpful suggestion tonight.

Don't feel bad. I attempt this song about every six months and then hang my head in shame at my ineptitude.

"We're lousy, we can't play. If you wait until you can play, you'll be too old to get up there. We stink, really. But it's great," Johnny Ramone .

i started learning it a while ago and found it alot harder than i thought i would. lots of subtle things going on
