Jaguar & The Savanas
Every track on this EP is like stepping in the ring with a boxer. Sometimes he smacks you fast, and sometimes slow, but you'll feel the bone of every knuckle break blood. I think a big part of the power comes from the crunchy and modern recording, but mixed close to mono, so the jabs come at you straight on. Still, all the instruments have their defined layer, so this is definitely not a retro, low-fi job. Standouts tracks are "The Ride of May Gray", with it's relentless beat and continuous build driven by a crunchy Eddie Angel style riff. "Gator Rescue" is a swinging beach party number, and "Castaway" a slow grinder; it would be a titty-shaker if the melody was played on a baritone sax, but is plenty steamy the way it is. The closing song "Ein Spion Satelliten verrÅckt" goes through dramatic changes in mood, the sound track to an as yet produced spy movie, though it avoids melodic cliches, and relies on intense power for tension. I can't say enough how this band is defined by it's tight drums/bass/rhythm guitars, it's like they are all of one mind.
I saw Jaguar & The Savanas perform at the Surfer Joe Festival 2012 in Livorno, Italy. This four piece band from Sicily can definitely can pull off the sound of this EP live. They have great stage chemistry, with towering, Lucha Libre masked band leader Massimo Pafumi stalking the stage, in stark contrast to his demure, talented and beautiful daughter who rips out prog surf riffs cooly. I definitely look forward to hearing more from this band.

Great write-up Ferenc. I agree, a really enjoyable band!

They're available from El Toro Records.

I should add that they have some major unobtanium and wanting to buy dozens of titles is a serious risk. I ordered the same record plus two by Los Twang! Marvels. Haven't arrived yet.
I'll be back.
Great review, BTW. I eagerly expect to be thrilled.
