One of our setlists is going to consist of 12-16 songs. 35-45 minutes. Lots of variables to consider when making a setlist. Location, time of day, audience make up, what time of band you are, what you want to accomplish with the audience, how you want to be perceived.

The type of gigs we took, we never tried to take a gig in which we'd be background music. None of this multiple-set stuff that a lot of surf bands do. One set, legitimate location. Not a corner of a restaurant or a sidewalk outside.

Keep it simple, keep it short, grab their attention, and leave them with an impression that makes them want more.

We do a lot of four-set gigs at fine clubs and venues, and we keep a mix of classic and modern surf tunes, along with instrumental versions of recognizable rock numbers (Please Please Me, White Wedding, That Thing You Do, What I Like About You,etc). Doing all surf tunes would be fun, but would lose the audience at the venues and events where we play.

Here's the The Surge! setlist from our July SoCal mini-tour (Suzy's, Don the Beachcomber, HB Pier:)

AND THE ADDRESS
BAJA
195 OTTLEY DRIVE
NICOLL BEER

HELL HOLE

MELTDOWN AT POINT BEACH
RUN BEFORE THE WIND
DEFLECTOR SHIELD
CRUISIN’ W/ HER TOP DOWN

We played a different set at the Baja Marty Tribute Show at The Starting Gate.

+1 on 'And the Address'
We've been doing 'Wring that Neck' in our band.

As mentioned, it depends on the gig. We love doing the opener for non surf bands and then will do mostly originals and instro covers of non surf songs (Calif Man/She Said She Said.)
We have a gig next month at a vinyard where the openers are a belly dance troupe Smile and we were asked by the owner to do a traditional surf music set soo:
Mr Moto
Baja
Surf Rider
Walk Don't Run
Surf Party
Backwash
Ghost Riders
Almost Lost My Mind
Wipe Out
Esperanza
Rumble
Rawhide
Mexico
Squad Car
Penetration
Miserlou

I really like the Daytona's track 'Go!'. I've got it on a compilation. It's got a nice sound quality to it I think. Did you ever use to play that one live?

Yes, we did play it live quite often, at least during the first years. I agree it's a really good song (written by our band leader Lars and organ player Björn) although I'm not a fan of the sound production. To me it sounds pretty dull and I think our follow-up album Quarter Mile was an improvement in getting a more exciting sound.

I like that it's mono. I see what you mean about the dullness but I think the mudiness of it is actually quite endearing
