I want to scream every time I see Jack Johnson labeled as surf
I second that. I get that all the time. In fact, when I mention "surf music" to my peers, they seem to think of Jack Johnson more than the Beach Boys.

Don't get me started on Jack Johnson being labeled surf music... but there are at least some people who are looking to the future -- my friend Chris, who plays guitar in my favorite garage band, The Teenage Harlets, has taken his Jazzmaster and gotten back to his roots with a surf/garage side project. It's all really lo-fo (hence the name l.fi, I guess), but his use of drum machines along with surfy dirty sounding guitar certainly pushes the envelope. Check the songs out at: http://www.myspace.com/lfirivetpop I'd consider this a pretty exciting direction for surf to turn in. |

I don't hate Jack Johnson. Not as good as some stuff from Hawaii but not that bad either. Several of his songs are rather poppy and likable. I have a mix CD a friend made me and it is always nice to listen to. |

I should clarify -- I don't have anything against Jack Johnson's music on it's own, I only take issue with the fact that people label it surf music. I've heard some people try to clarify/compromise by calling it "surfer music"... ~B~ |

Yeah, I second that. Too many people are considering acoustic Pop to be surf. Sheryl Crow, Tom Curren (great surfer, but not really playing surf) and Donovan Frank something a rather who is also a great surfer, but doesn't really play surf and has a really hard last name to remember. Just becuase somebody shoots a video on the beach or has some surf footage in the video doesn't make them a surf band. Call it music that is for earthy surfers is more appropriate, but that is also limiting to the regions that are truly populated with surfers. Acoustic Pop and Rock are just acoustic music. Nothing more than that. Myself being a surfer, wouldn't want to associated with this type of music personally. I prefer music that is much more edgy and less feel. |

I almost posted a really nasy response about Jack Johnson, and anybody who likes his music. But I rethought it. Do I hate his music, No. Jeff(bigtikidude) —Jeff(bigtikidude) |

Jeff, why wouldn't you just pop in a Radiohead CD instead of listening to MUSE? Not that I would be able to tell the difference between Radiohead and MUSE... I am neither a stoner or surfer. I do like boring things though so that his why Jack Johnson works for me. |

compared to what is on the market today, putting shit on JJ or Radiohead seems unfair. Imagine what a support slot with one of those guys would do for surf music? Imagine if more big bands followed REM and had a surf music adam |

I'll volunteer a reason, Jake: unlike Radiohead (boring, boring, boring...) Muse seriously ROCKS! I'm a big fan of Muse, but Radiohead leaves me completely cold. Yeah, Muse's singer sounds like Radiohead's singer, but the similarities end there. I think Muse is freakin' genius. And they have several songs on the new album with surf/spanish/arabic influences. Awesome stuff. (Sorry for the ) Ivan —Ivan |

This boogles my mind. I enjoy Radiohead and Muse to a certain extend, although they do differ from each other. —Science friction burns my fingers. |

I thought Jack Johnson sang kid's music...like "Curious George"...???
sort of a folk/blues/jazz kind of singer...sounds like Michael Franks, or Mose Allison...or maybe even Sade (but without Sade's soul-touch)...a story tellin' sort of style... |

I think The Jesus And Mary Chain are more "surf" than Jack Johnson. —Happiness is being a surf musician that actually surfs. Ride Lord Hunt Surfboards!!! |
