Frankly, the "impress the chicks" factor ranks so far below giving the crowd the best performance we can, that it is a total NON-factor to me.

I'm sure that most of you trying to impress the chicks must be such guitar virtuosos that you NEVER make mistakes. Alas, with my pedestrian skills, if I allowed myself to be distracted by any chick, teenaged or older, I'd start goofin' up in the middle of Journey To The Stars, or Hawaii 5-0! And the way I look, I'd better be able to handle my guitar 'cause I sure ain't gonna impress any young chick with my looks!

Besides, there's only one "chick" I'm interested in, and she tells me that she's impressed no matter what I wear! Very Happy

There is no doubt in my mind that wearing an intentional outfit on stage embellishes the band. It does a few things, most people live in the visual world, and of course we as musicians have a greater understanding of the audible world. The public also gets the idea that these guys are professional, that they are serious about their show. Whatever we can do to draw the audience in to our show is a positive. It contributes to the total package. Along with the look of the band it also helps to relate to the audience. Some bands on stage stare at the fret board or the hi hat. If we can look at the audience, engage the audience, they will have a better time.
Of course the music is the bottom line. If the sounds aren’t there no outfit in the world is going to make you a good band.

We play alot gigs are in clubs where the audience isn't always hip to surf music. And the the thought of 4 middle-aged white guys shredding instrumentals might wear, just a teeny bit on the average listener. So we adopted the Space suits and glowing neon glasses. Our personas are part of the fun. Then we get to have our fun, and the audience definitly remembers us. See for yourselves. Plus I get to work the fog machine!!! Twisted Evil

(From the other thread)A respected authority on these things came to see our band on Friday. I didn't speak to him directly but apparently he was highly complimentary of our music but said we were lacking just one thing... uniforms.

Apparently a surf band needs a uniform of one sort of another.

OK we don't set the highest sartorial standards but .. uniform?

Comments and alternative band dress codes please!

At the start of this thread, I was more or less ambivolent to the whole"dress code" issue. In some cases though, it's been a requirement (thought not an unwelcome one)...

Stagewear I think is a must as well as moving on stage you don't want to be stairing at your shoelaces all night Very Happy give the crowd some eye candy if your having fun on stage people will feed off of that.

You'll never catch us in sweaters (cardigans, hawaiian shirts) no offence
be loud with your stagewear (uniformity) leave the old t-shirts, pants for around the house or rehearsals dress up! have fun. The thing you can't forget is that you are putting on a show besides the music.

...I was in this band in the early 90's.... that's me, Louie, on the left.
1977 Stratocaster. The other guitars are mine too... 74 Strat and 74 P-bass.

L7 I love all 4 types of Jaguars "Vintage" "AVRI" "MIJ" "CIJ"
it's all up to you on how much dough you want to spend

"MIJ" "CIJ" all you need to do is upgrade the pickups and setup the axe to your liken'

I own MIJ Candy apple red Jaguar and I love it excellent color, I have also Americanized it!
I changed out the pots, pickguard "Mintgreen", AVRI trem and floating tremolo, tunners everything but the body and neck, ebay at the moment has a few for auction.

I own a "Vintage" 62' in sunburst and a "AVRI" in sunburst they are both kick ass but the "Vintage" has this mojo I can't explain Very Happy

Here's are photos of my "MIJ" & "Vintage"

Kyle ~

was there something objectionable about the pickups or electronics in the Japanese Jaguars, that caused you to swap them out ?

Louie Cool

The MIJ/CIJ electronics differ from US, from the value of the US pots to Japan pots as well as the capacitors, MIJ/CIJ pickups don't have that vintage tone

Seymour Duncan Jaguar pickups are awesome upgrades because of thier detail in sound, construction, and appearance, As close as you'll get to the real Jaguar pickups of the 60s Very Happy I would at least recomend changing out the Japan Jaguar pickups and throw in US reissue pickups.

Not OT at all, you wear guitars on stage, therefore guitars=stagewear Wink

I lived in the Redondo Beach area in the 60's. Where are the Pendletons! Yes, they are hot (wool) but I haven't seen ANYBODY in a surf band wearing this staple of 60's attire. The Beach Boys wore them on some early cover art but as I recall EVERYONE was wearing those with white jeans (and tight, high water jeans at that). Unless you went to a Tiki bar like Latitude 20 (no surf music there) no one was wearing Hawaiian shirts--that was Martin Denny's thing and he was an old dude playing your parents music in Hawaii where they wear that kind of shirt. I have long been confused by the rampant use orchid prints by surf bands as it never was part of that scene. None of my neighbors looked like Ozzie either, we made fun of his sweater even then. I only ever wore a cardigan to Sunday school and that was by force. Forever Surf at Ollies Diner is closer to the SoCal 60's look than anything else I've seen in this thread.

but the bands were dressed to impress! Im not entrely sure, but I dont think I ever saw a pic of a surfband performing in the early 60's dressed in anything other then a suit. was that commo, or is it just that those are the only bands that pics were made of?

Speaking of you...Your pic of the day pic RULES!

I wear some of my old Pendleton shirts onstage sometimes Wink

Chicks dig 'em!

all bands wore suits back then, not just surf bands.
People wore suits to go on a plane flight or train ride too.
Does that mean I should break out my suit I got for my sisters wedding , and wear it on the flight to portland???
