C'mon guys...can we PUHLEEZE get back to discussing what's really important? Does the FRV-1 sound as good as an outboard tank? —Insect Surfers |

Being professionally interested in visual communication, I will try to observe whether Brian’s intention of presenting the international origins of this site’s members – or the opposite – manifesting national dominance in an intuitive way, is the result of this new feature. It's an American site and American dominant. That doesn't mean Americans are unfriendly to outsiders but it is easier for them to chin-wag with each other and a little harder to find common ground with oversea folk imo. Hopefully, a glance to the flag with remind we are all on the world wide web. I like the idea of learning what other nations flags look like also. |

When I meet someone new and ask, "So, where're you from?" it's not so I can feel superior and bash where ever that is. Likewise, when someone new joins SG101 and leaves out some or all the location information in his profile, one of the most common questions asked here is, "So, where're you from?" The reason is usually to find out if he's near enough to visit, has seen a show or knows someone in common. In my experience, it has NEVER been used to feel superior to anyone. FYI, for those wondering, I am far too old to ever use phrasing like, "to meet someone and ask where they're from," or, "someone came in and they ..." This does not mean I believe all people are men. —This is Noel. Reverb's at maximum an' I'm givin' 'er all she's got. |

We just hate people from Hampshire. Nothing personal! How Surf Guitar 101 formed is from Brian's Surf Guitar website and my website Hate Hampshire 101. We combined the two and got Surf Guitar 101. The Hampshire hate has fallen by the wayside... I blame the FRV-1. I think if the American's seem more jovial with each other it is because we've all, mostly, met in person before. Or chatted late into the night in the chat room(which nobody uses anymore...) |

Before this blows up all over again, the key to understanding the, "has to put a Star of David under his ..." is the historical reference to the yellow arm patches worn in Germany during Hitler's reign. While the thought never occurred to me, I haven't grown up somewhere where people once had to display signs of their "disloyalty" in public. If I had, maybe, just maybe, the same thought would have occurred to me too. —This is Noel. Reverb's at maximum an' I'm givin' 'er all she's got. |

Wow! Did this thread really get this out of hand. Please don't tell me that my last internet sanctuary away from the polarized politics of today is being taken over? I am with JONPAUL. Let us get back to what matters. Tank or Pedal? Ivan mentioned this a while back, an not to hijack the thread, but it really would be nice if people started showing as much passion for newly recorded music on this site as they do for gear or inane things such as politics. Noel starting up his review thread was a very nice start. How many of you have actually picked up any number of the new Surf albums and EPs put out in the past few years? —THE KBK ... In the interest of stirring the pot, I would like to suggest to Brian that now that he has mastered the flag coding, he might want to extract further information from member profiles to enhance it a bit and so we can tell better with whom we are dealing. We have two data points, either of which may be blank: member map location and flag location.
Oh, I just thought of it, how about a feature that allows us to hide posts from countries we don't like? It could be automatically selected for those members whose flags don't match their locations. Also, all posts from untrustworthy members should be hidden by default and you have to click on them to read them. Sorry, I think my joke just went too far. Sleep well, Brian. —RK |

If I could change anything on this site, it would be actually having everyone have their real name, state, country and what band they play with, if they happen to do so. However, this is just personal preference, as I love getting to know people here and really love targeting any chance to meet people while out on the road. —THE KBK ... This is the last known signal. Seems like I have to clarify a little bit. Mentioning that the result might be different from Brian’s intention still doesn’t make the flags political in my view. I was thinking about purely quantitative dominance, especially since the number of flags on the site is a product of the number of posts by the respective member, so when I tell Big Tiki Dude one time “I’m from Germany”, he’s telling me 20 times “I’m from the US”. But I’m fine with it – that’s where you all got me wrong! It’s just a realistic picture of the facts of the site. Nothing more, nothing less. To show the variety of nations present here, a banner of flags across the site-header would be sufficient. —The Exotic Guitar of Kahuna Kawentzmann You can get the boy out of the Keynes era, but you can’t get the Keynes era out of the boy.
