Did a search & saw no topic devoted to this, so...
Last week Yep Roc Records announced the release of the new LSJ album, "Jet Set," along with swag to accompany the "Jet Set" theme.
http://www.yeproc.com/los-straitjackets-all-new-album-jet-set-available-for-pre-order-now-at-the-yep-roc-store-exclusive-bundles?utm_source=Facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=7.19.2012losstraitjacketsjetsetrelease

Now, compare that album cover with this one:
image
Next, compare the swag offered by Yep Roc...

...to the swag offered by Tikiyaki Orchestra in 2009 to promote their album "Swingin Sounds for the Jungle Jetset"...
http://ourtikilife.blogspot.com/2009/07/tikiyaki-orchestras-jungle-jet-pack.html

May be hard to see, but "It had a flight bag, paper airplane to assemble, flight pin, barf bag, coasters, stickers, fortune cookies, a limited edition tiki necklace by Kirby, a limited edition tiki mug by Squid, and of course, Tikiyaki Orchestra's latest cd."
Thoughts?

I don't see how one would effect the other. It's clear that LSJ is doing a tribute to the cover of 101strings, but Tikiyaki isnt the only band to offer swag along w/ there release.
Basically what i'm saying is that LSJ isn't stepping on Bacchi toes at all.

Yeah, I saw that too. The album cover is a pretty blantant rip-off of the 101 Strings cover. I think that's the only real issue here. Lots of people are doing "bundling" to try to help CD's. With CD sales dropping year by year, doing something new or unique is one way to help sell CD's. Bundles are a great way to do that. I don't think the LSJ bundle is really ripping off or even inspired by the Tikiyaki bundle. To be honest, I'm a huge fan of both bands, but if I could only buy one, I'd definitely go for the Tikiyaki bundle (and buy LSJ on CD or digital download).

And....
The Tikiyaki Bundle referenced, is from 2 years ago.
I would hope that they don't think the LSJs bundle will
hinder the Hinder their sales.

I had to google 101 strings...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/101_Strings
I like the idea of the LSJ cover, and paying homage to the 101 strings cover, but I think it is too much of a rip-off. It almost looks like they just took the original and added their heads (although I think the new cover has been re-drawn). It's too close for comfort I think. They could have changed it up just slightly and made it as cool, still had the look of the original, without looking like a total cut and paste job.
This is a bit off topic, but now is as good a time as any to announce my new cd will be available soon - here's a sneak peek at the cover.

Nicely done - that's exactly what LSJ have done with their cover (although obviously the 101 Strings LP is a bit more obscure!)

The Ghastly Ones did the tiki necklaces and mugs. CLEARLY, Tikiyaki is infringing. Oh and NO ONE has ever nicked old obscure record covers before. Admit it, Whorehay, you hate Los Straitjackets and have a personal axe to grind. Isn't it true that in 1974, you....;)

I believe the LSJ cover art is a homage to the 101 strings album art, nothing more. The last LSJ album cover had the band drawn as retro super hero comic book art. Then there is the ongoing Lucha Libre thing.
I think the only thing LSJ are guilty of is a love of Kitch.

I dunno - love of kitch and paying homage is one thing, straight up theft is another - I thought the new cover was really cool and kitchy, but it's less so knowing that its totally stolen. Nothing has been changed, except the addition of the masks. It's a fine line between "in the style of" and "ripped off". I think this is a case of ripped off.
These are an homage - Same style, but they stand on their own as separate piece of art, made to be in the style of the originals.

Just posted on the Los straitjackets facebook page:
the new Los Straitjackets album package was designed by the great Johnny Bartlett of California. When he came up with this parody/mashup of this classic 101 strings record-- who could resist! Thanks to 6100 Ventures for use of the 101 strings illustration.

"Designed"??? And if it is a parody I don't get it. Big rip off. That's what it is.

Johnny Bartlett did the new LSJ cd art? wow. Johnny did the Aquasonics cd packaging, and I really like both versions - they recalled classic album covers without being total knock-offs.

The new LSJ cd is even called the same thing as the 101strings album. C'mon....

Regarding tributes to album covers, it seems to me that most artists that do so choose an album cover that MEANS something to them, that influenced them in a big way. Some examples below:

I find it hard to believe that this particular (or ANY, for that matter) 101 Strings' album influenced and/or means anything to LSJ besides some kitschy album art.

My personal favorite tribute cover...

The big difference is that the Beach Boys LP cover is Sunset Beach, where the Reefriders CD cover is Pipeline.

Below is the cd art - the other appears to be the LP vinyl art.
