I'm working to start a Surf/Rock Insto band in Pinellas County Florida. Probably do a few vocal songs.
It's very disappointing but, strictly Surf and Surf only bands do not do well in the Tampa Bay area. Much of the music scene is hung up on Classic Rock, Country, Blues, Reggae, you know, the usual buzz-words. Even the last Jazz radio station shut down about two years ago. There is at least a Rock-a-billy presence but it is very small.
I have found that when people hear the Surf sound, most will respond positively. I sense though that something new, like instumental based Rock 'n Roll could possibly catch on. But, most bands around here don't stay together long enough to gain a reputation and a following.
I'd like to try breaking the cycle.

Keep the faith Randy. I had some good luck running into some cool guys recently who are into classic instrumental surf music and we have been practicing and having fun. You never know when things might develop.
I'm looking forward to the Man or Astroman? show this Thursday in Orlando (Thursday July 19 at The Social: 54 N Orange Avenue, Orlando, FL 32801), going over with some friends.

How true! A guy by the name of Frank from the band Cutback out of Lauderdale saw one of my posts and put me in touch with a drummer here in Tampa Bay. We've jammed twice with two guitarist friends that he knows. Great guys all. We're putting together a setlist. Having an absolute blast. I'll keep you updated on the progress.
How goes it by you?

Hi Rand, going good. Having fun playing with these guys, probably play our first gig in September. We are doing very traditional instrumental rock and surf instrumentals which is what I was looking for in a band. So I'm doing my more experimental stuff on my own on the side. Good vibes and musicianship.
I like Cutback's musicultural show, they play around Melbourne sometimes. I'm going to go see them at the Mai-Kai before too long.
Glad to hear you found some good guys to play with, I look forward to hearing you guys and getting together to jam one of these days.

Thought I'd hoist the flag yet again. I'm still interested in A Surf/Instro band. I think the music scene here has flat-lined!
