That would be interesting to have the Satan's Pilgrims opinion about how they share the guitars lines in this thread.
In Pirato Ketchup, we have 3 guitars. Funny thing is that we did not decide to start with 3 guitars. Whan I joined the band there already were 2 guitar players and they asked for me to come for jamming with them. Then they asked me to join the band. I mostly play rythm parts and the 2 other guys share the solo/ambient parts. But we worked hard to have 3 very different guitar sound that fits well together. Well, our current recording don't reflect what I am trying to explain here but we plan to release new material in October.

Generally speaking two will be fine live. I used to write for just two, but now I tend to write for 3 or 4. Generally speaking, those parts can be reduced to 2 guitars and a bass for the live shows without losing the overall effect.

I've played without another guitarist live, but I would definitely prefer not to do so. I need somebody to cover my back when I mess up.

I'd also like to avoid 3 guitarists live. I doubt I could find two players that would be confident enough to tacet for much of the time.

Right before he released the Stratocaster in 1954, Leo Fender remarked "2 is great BUT 3 will kill em' !" While he was referring to 2 p-up's (Tele) & the 3 p-up's (the new Stratocaster), 2 guitars is all you really need but for the summer of 1966, we had 3. (Each one of us used a Princeton Reverb & we still played "BAJA" "PENETRATION" & "SIMILAU" anyway ! The 1966 audience never seemed to mind at all !).
