I'll be ordering some new surf releases this month and next and will make a concerted effort to post reviews of them here. Having to take forced layoffs from guitar practice for 10-14 weeks every year since I started learning guitar has contributed to me remaining in the ranks of surf music fans, being unable to progress to performing surf guitarist. What that means is that I can't write a helpful peer review if I wanted to, and I know it. So I won't be offering any advice, just reporting my emotional reactions, levels of listening enjoyment and inspiration. Wish I could offer more, but I'll do my best.
As someone who has written a shocking number of gear posts since I joined fourteen months ago, it's the least I can do.
If anyone has a release they'd like me to review, or not , feel free to let me know.

While the Radio Free Bakersfield podcast is not the same as an album, I appreciate both positive & negative thought out feedback. Seems to me this is a pretty fair board & a smart one.

I have always been conflicted when it comes to reviews. The very idea of them is so subjective, unless said review does nothing more than discuss the technical quality of recording or the textbook quality of the notes played. Frankly, neither of these have much bearing in the end on whether an album is asthetically pleasing to the listener. It all depends on their personal taste. Even more, the only way a review is actually useful is if it also provides some reference to the personal taste of the reviewer. For example, Phil Dirt tends to be not so kind to Man or Astro-man?. Is this to say that they put out terrible albums? Probably not. Research the bands he tends to rave on and those he pans and a pattern shows up that he is just not a fan of many bands that take such liberty with the structure of 'surf' music.

That'd explain why his favorite band is those ultimate traditionalists that never ever take any liberties with surf music, the Mermen.

I like the idea of reviewing podcasts and downloads in addition to new releases. But what about new reissues and comps of old records? Is there any value to reviewing those too?
FYI, I'm going to review recordings of bands that might not be here. Is that controversial? They may decide to join.
I'm aiming for one per week, but might be more or less productive depending on the rest of my life.

I'd always like to include ordering information, but I have a lot of CDs and 7" records that I bought at shows. If I don't include ordering information in a review, PLEASE add a comment including it to the review topic. Thanks.
Like for these.

Interesting topic. I always figured any press is good press. Grade A? Grade D? It shouldn't really matter too much.
