Good point, forgot about the Sonic Youth, which also always reminds me of the pixies. Good stuff! Carol Says:
Green Onions was one of my first favorites. Somehow it seems like surf music like the way that the Ventures does. Heres another one of my favorites, although they do sing in the original i guess Jeremy Last edited: Jul 03, 2012 21:56:45 |

Jeff - you beat me to Cliffs of Dover. No shame on that one - besides his playing ability, the melody and emotion/feeling there is undeniable. As far as in my lifetime, Cliffs of Dover was the first guitar instro song I can remember hearing on the radio as a new/current popular music release. And while not guitar based, who can forget Herbie Hancock - Rockit, and From Beverly Hills Cop - Axel F as other MTV or "main stream radio" instrumental hits during my lifetime. Another detour from where this tread started... My dad played brass as a young boy and continues to this day. As a career military guy, he had an appreciation for Drum & Fife stuff, Scottish Bag Pipes (most the stuff akin to Drum & Fife), and British Brass Band competition standards. Heard a lot of all of those growing up. In the late 70's or very early 80's he took a liking to Chuck Mangione, picked up the flugelhorn and learned most every song on every album. Children of Sanchez always stood out to me, still does. Later he went back to trumpet and we heard lots of great players, including Arturo Sandoval who also stands out in my memory - that cat could blow! Dig Caravan!! Ok... slightly back to the theme of "popular", non-surf instrumentals. Other newer instrumental songs - actually instrumental bands... Pelican & Rodgrio Y Gabriella. Several really choice cuts from both bands but I'll embed a stand out song from each here. Rod Y Gab: Diablo Rojo. Pelican: City of Echoes. —Fady El Mirage @ ReverbNation |

Simple Minds have quite a few great instrumentals, most from their early years. Here are a couple of my faves: (Sorry, can't figure out how you guys are embedding the YouTube videos) —Sean Surf CD's / Vinyl / Fanzines / DVD's Last edited: Jul 04, 2012 10:31:06 |

After Beethoven was mentioned, I really can't say anything anymore... But Sean, thanks for the reminder on Simple Minds, what a great band they were. Gonna have a re-listen to "Empires & Dance" now. |

Ruling out soundtrack stuff, this is one of many. I actually heard the Mike Oldfield version first. —Mike Last edited: Jul 05, 2012 06:29:50 |

And finally... Well, some vocalizations in the Focus tune, but not vocal in the general sense. The Steve Hackett is an all-time fave. Sorry for spewing all over the this thread, but I loves my instrumentals. Mike Last edited: Jul 05, 2012 06:33:39 |

A few of my favourites (besides Beethoven's 9th which was already mentioned): Mono - Moonlight Old punks never die... They just become surf rockers. |

One that I almost completely forgot about... A couple by Sandy Nelson... One by Electric Light Orchestra (don't think it'd detract from the song any, if it were sans the shouted "Xanadu." In the movie, it was the lead in to the song by that name.)... And one by Pink Floyd, from Obscured by Clouds... Fast Cars & Loud Guitars! |
