I exagerate how much I dislike things at times with colorful language.

sigh....

Suit yourself man.

Dude, I'm going to listen to your advice. I didnt' say i wasn't going to. I acknowledge my 'colorfulization' of language doesn't work on the board as it may with my friends.

Sorry if I tend to disagree with people more often than other posters.

I do like the more traditional sounds. I sure wish that the future would be more in the sounds of the early 60's.

PLEASE keep the Surf Music original, and traditional OR IT JUST WOULDN'T BE SURF MUSIC. It would be something else.

Jim,

I, too, love the traditional sounds, but I don't want to hear surf stay
exclusively in the style of the first wave any more than I would want
blues to remain the style of the 1920's; or rock to stay in the style of
the '50's. I respect your preference, but to me music dies if it doesn't
evolve. IMHO people clinging to a specific era or tradition without
giving new music a chance, miss out on some great music.

I'm really enjoying this thread. I studied visual art pretty hard core for a few years, and in a class of 10-15 every day i would be blown away by the different response & outcomes produced by each student concerning the same subject matter. Also we would study the 'classics', re-interpret them, sometimes it worked, other times it didn't.
I think surf is heading in many different directions all at the same time, just like any other form of art. New artists are always going to study the classics, some may even want to reproduce or improve on them, others are gonna branch out totally. I personally feel big things are around the corner for surf guitar. It is global and connected, it has no language barrier, it's gonna spread through different sub-cultures like a virus....

In fact, an understanding and appreciation of surf's roots is essential before you can go out and successfully mold it. If the guys playing progressive surf nowadays didn't like the surf music of old, they wouldn't be trying to build off the genre, and they certainly wouldn't be calling their own music "surf."

Then there's Gary Hoey, selling himself as a 'surf guitarist' with clearly no appreciation for real surf music.... Damn Vai-wannabe. That guy really rubs me the wrong way...

a friend of mine tried to talk me into seeing gary hoey in salt lake city a while back because he knew i was into surf music. i passed, he went. he told me it was a good thing i didn't go because it wasn't surf and it was so ear piercingly loud he had to leave.

I would like to see all te young bands that have came in and graced us something promising and then announce they quit. Re-Think your decisions.

I’d agree but Gary is one of the nicest guys you will ever meet. No huge ego. We have opened for him and he packed the place. I don't get why he is called surf at all except for doing the soundtrack to endless summer 2. He is making a living at music, so I guess he is going where the dough is. He is a damn smooth player as well. Not that I own any of his disks mind you.

Cool Cool i would like to see surf music go to the mississippi gulf coast. its the closest beach to us and we don"t get any surf music here. so a nice beach and some fine surf music only 5 hours away would be nice. here, here. peace

I gotta hop in the boat with Tom on this one - musically, the Hoey is a bit of a wanker, and is indeed stuck in the late 80s. Personally, he was one of the nicest, most accommodating and supportive "big names" we've ever played with. Hell, he sang our praises like 2 years after we played with him, when he did a spot on Clint Beachwood's show.

As for the volume, I do recall there being something like 4 4x12 cabs for his guitar alone, and I think his bass player went through 2 8x10 cabs. BIIIIIG sound.

For me, the question "where would you like to see surf music headed in the future?" is impossible to answer specifically, because I like to be surprised. For example, Man or Astro-man? blew me away because I never would have imagined that "retro-futuristic sci-fi-surf-punk with B-movie samples" would work so well. If I could specify the developments I'd like to see, I wouldn't be surprised by them, would I?

But to answer in a very general way: I'd like to see a continued mix of trad surf and trad-surf-rooted wacky experimentation. Let a thousand reverb tanks bloom!

I was going to say, "Please, more bands head up hill." And put it on the calendar.

Unfortunately, many people equate "music-that-modern-sufer-type-people-like" with the term "surf music"...it's sort of an catch-all amalgamated term that includes all sorts of metal-reggae-primus-punk-skater-RHCP-sublime-korn sorts of music...

Even more unfortunately, many of these sorts of people are music-club promoters and music/media producers!

I'd like to see surf get the recognition it deserves for being a classic American art form, and not just some kind of nostalgic novelty.

That, and some decent-paying gigs would be nice.

Ah, seifu...the wisdom of your words is only superceded by the subtle beauty of this noble sentiment!

I would like to see Surf music get a little more public awareness.

What would be cool is a web based store that catered to fans of surf music. Recently i have followed links from here, reverb central, and misc Jazzmaster sites to purchase CDs. If i could go to one site or search for surf music on iTunes and find what i am looking for, others may be able to do the same.

Worship amen to that! Surf music should at least get the same iconic pop-culture status as Elvis and Andy Warhol.

made me think of the blues brothers' live album "made in America", in the introduction to "green onions", Elwood has a little speech about american culture, comparing booker T. i.a. with the European classical composers.

I would like to see Mike Myers do a surf movie spoof, with Jack Black playing some part. Lots of hot girls in bikinis, and a soundtrack and live performances of modern surf bands...
