This is a great idea and it works out pretty good. With my old band 'Crashmatics' we cut our tune, "Beyond the Break" all through the internet.
Heres how we did it:
- I wrote the rhythm and drum track
- Sent that to our drummer, he recorded his drums and sent it back
- Then we recorded the bass on my laptop via direct
- Lastly, we added the lead then we mixed it in Logic Pro
So my point is, if you coordinate it properly it is achievable, it would be especially interesting to have someone either A) lay a rhythm down as a basis and then B) have drummers, guitarists, and bassist submit their version. I mean who knows, you might be able to add like 10 different leads if you can find enough guys on here (myself including) to add some lead parts.
Heres what I got to offer:
- Guitars, Rhythm and Lead
- Logic Pro to mix it
It could be the ultimate SG101 comp!!!!

I know this works well cause I was in on the song mr spaghetti refers to. And it's a lot of fun to boot!

If there are any drummers willing to experiment on something a little different, I have an incomplete work in progress needing a drum track. It's a pretty huge, groggy sounding minor keyed wall of fuzz instrumental, not surfy, but does have a treacherous, giant tentacles breaching the gunwale, stormy maritime feel to it. 60 b.p.m, mostly 4/4, but the intro and chorus timing is different. Needs big, natural, live drum sound. If interested I can post it in its current state so you can hear what you'd be getting yourself into.

Hi everybody! This virtual surf band sounds very good to me! What about using Ohm studio? It's a like cubase daw, but it allows people to play and record together online, in real time, with a chat function. The beta version is free to download, I've tried it yesterday, it works well, but it really needs some surf musicians... If somebody's interested, let me know. I can play guitar, bass, or programming some drums.

I can simplify this idea or enhance it. But at the moment its just a basic concept. (The concept for this is as the name of the tune suggests). So feel free to chime in - ideas given and taken freely.
(If anyone here prefers, I can upload a clean recording, or do this with electric guitars and amps mic'd, sans robo-drummer, etc. PM me if interested)

FWIW I downloaded the beta of Ohmstudio but couldn't get it to work (after 3 tries), so I've (temporarily?) given up on Ohmstudio for now.
As I was finishing this thing last night, I suddenly had a flash of inspiration about how to speed the tune up into something surf-rockier. So I'm having another go at this idea today.

I'm not using Ohm Studio but I am doing .mp3s when I get the time. Me an RK have been quietly working away on a bit of stuff here and there. (Its his turn at the moment ;-). I've got a bunch of other melody arrangements and fragments thereof for gweetar, but its a matter of listening to them and then iteratively ping-ponging ideas, to truly get a colaboration going. How did I miss this? I can do guitar & bass like a lot of people & have a nice home studio with good mics & pre's but I think my surf drum programming in Toontrack Superior drummer is pretty darn good. If there's a way I could send a midi track, folks could choose their own preferred kits in their DAWs if they wanted.
