Hahahaha! and not to forget the "Dammit-I-DON'T-live-in-a-GHETTO-blues"...or the "Forgive-me-for-my-shiny-expensive-SUV-BLues"....ok, now I feel like I need to crank up my ERIC CLAPTON reissue fender Amp and play some Gary Moore on it, screw all that nasty REVERB anyways!

Me love surf music.
Discovered this music in ninth grade, and made instrumental music my passion. Shame I don't like more of it, but I prefer instrumental music to songs hands down. Instrumental music puts you somewhere and makes you decipher it. When writing instrumental music, you have to be quite aware of what you are doing and what you are putting into the song and if you pay attention to that then you get something that is truly a work of one's self. Not a work of what one wished they were or what they wished they were.
As for surf music, I love how primal it can be, but completely beautiful. It generally lacks space, which is its one negative(I love Ambient music), but there is a constant motion of music when coupled with the right dynamics that just creates perfect songwriting.

While @ age 13, getting ready for summer school, shirt 1/2 on already.....we hear "Walk Don't Run '64" as "the new one from the Ventures" on WINS in NYC. I did'nt know what "this" was, but I suddenly felt driven to duplicate it at all costs. I had bought "Wipeout" by the Surfaris the year earlier...& had gotten "OK" on my cousin's Ukelele he gave me. I signed up for "guitar lesson w/ rented gutar" & plowed away ! Within a year I had a Gibson SGjr & then, a Princeton Reverb. My parents, not bein' "rich" told me I hadda' do this on my own cos' they could only help "somewhat". (They gave me about $10 for every $90 I earned). The "new" Gibson was $115 w/a chipboard case & the Princeton Reverb was a "floor model" for $125. A P-90 guitar & Fender Reverb amp was enough to "roughly duplicate" what I heard (mute those strigs, reverb on 4). I was the guy in the band who would insist on "Moon Dawg" & "Miserlou" in 1967 ! All but one of the others said "Nah, that's out now".....but "the audience always danced to it" & seemed happy with us. The rest is not history.

Hmmm..well the FIRST time it was because I heard Dick Dale then The Lively Ones...Astronauts and Chantays
British Invasion set in,,,goodbye surf....jump ahead a "few" years..
Dick was coming off the crest of Pulp Fiction and Tribal Thunder saw him play and hung out and chatted with him about music and martial arts after a show at
Sonoma State Univ...at the same time a co worker introduced me to the music of the Aqua Velvets/Jon And The Nightriders and a few others as well.
Got the itch to take the style and add a bit of an edge to it but keep true to the first wave style....lastly it's a challenge to play well!

A friend of mine is in a very popular and busy cover band. This is why they don't play surf music. It actually reminds me a bit of how The Ventures chose the tunes they covered.

Formed in early 2007, Flyin Blind is a party rock band out of Northeastern Pennsylvania covering rock hits from the 70’s ‘til now. Now it's true, there are dozens of party rock cover bands in the area. So what makes Flyin Blind stand out from the crowd?
3 things.
First, Song Selection. The band’s philosophy is simple; play what the people want to hear. not meant to be rude, just a few thoughts/questions.
1st It seems weird to post this (yours above)in this thread.
Maybe you should post about your friends band in the Shallow end.
I don't see how they pertain to the topic of the thread.
2nd, there is no doubt that lots of people will love a great top 100 vocal cover band, over a surf/instrumental band. Most of the general public wants to be force fed the same songs over and over. Its call familiarity.
3rd, this below puzzles me

Last weekend we played a gig at a big party. We played first, loaded all our stuff back into our cars, grabbed some food and watched the 'professional band' they hired playing their stuff. After a couple of top 100 songs (Stones, Beatles, Breakfast at Tiffanys, Wonderwall, etc.) in CD quality (they were really good, no kidding), people wanted us to play again, because they were bored by the other songs and performance. Faith in humanity restored! And that's why I love to play surf music. I've never heard someone saying he/she doesn't like surf music at all. Maybe it's not their favorite music, but they will dance anyway...

BTD, and I suppose everyone,
Didn't expect anyone to think I was being rude. The primary key is the second sentence. This is why they don't play surf music. I am not promoting their band. And the secondary key is the sentence about how similar their approach to music is to how The Ventures used to choose music to cover. They scan the top 100 and do surveys, just like The Ventures once did. Their post isn't so much an argument against playing surf music as a counter-point to the reasons everyone here loves and plays (or at least tries to) play surf. As much as they love playing music, they are treating it as a business, not a pleasure. They play Nickleback because Nickleback is an audience favorite, even if they don't like it.
In Pennsylvania, bars and even restaurants with bars, are allowed to sell six-packs of beer.
It seems to me we play what we like, and either play to surf music audiences or try to get other audiences into it. This band plays just what their audiences want, and nothing else. It's a completely different approach to playing music, much more show business craft (give 'em what they want) and less the personal expression of artists. I've talked to my friend about adding some surf to their set list. I've introduced him to, and he's really impressed by The Madeira, Daikaiju, KBK, Tmen, The Deadbeats and some others, but there's just no way they'll try that without it passing through their selection filter.

the topic is 'why do you play surf music?' not 'why they don't'. it's not even a band you are in and ends up sounding like it's a post from a paid spokesperson. might have even been borderline proper if it were at least 1st hand.

I can't delete it from the memories of those who've read it. And I can't delete the portions of it quoted by others. I can admit I shouldn't have posted it, but I still did. So I don't know what to do.
