Permalink tube reverb DIY clone project - now with soundfiles!

New Topic
Goto Page: 1 2 Next

Hi everybody,

I´m currently working on a tube reverb DIY project based on the well known 6G15.
Attached you´ll find my layout v1.0.

I did some stompboxes in the past and also a tube amp kit. But this is my first build that includes the layout, so that´s why I am convinced that there are lots of mistakes.

I´ve carefully read jbennets report on rebuilding his unit.

And here are some questions and comments on the layout:

I´m looking forward to your comments!

Wiring:
pink/black: ground
yellow: signal
red: high voltage
blue: anode
green: cathode
black/yellow and black/red: heaters
bold grey: shielded for signal

I have separated the signal ground from chassis ground using auto ground lift similar to the reissue fender reverb.

all jacks are isolated.

grounds are routed locally to star points and then routed to the central star at the auto ground lift board.
I´m not sure if this is a good layout…

I did not plan a brass plate at the pots yet, as I thought to not need one with my grounding concept…

Are the shielded cables used correct?
I use them from input to the first tube and from the reverb tanks return to the next tube (input to grid…)

I would put the filtercaps inside the chassis. Is that ok? Should I separate them from the board?

I added a 56k bleeder resistor for the filter caps. Ok?

rectifier is planned as full wave, I will get some more volts for B+, but I think this is not a big issue…

heaters will be balanced by two 100 Ohm resistors

mains transformer will be a 50VA torodial one inside the chassis.

choke will be Hammond 194A (Fender 125C3A) attached outside the chassis above the filter caps aligned vertical (bolts top and bottom)

OT will be a Hammond 125BSE. Will be put outside the chassis in the last third of the chassis width, also aligned vertical.

are the transformers located and aligned correct?

Chassis will be Hammond 444-20 in aluminium,

Housing will be according orig specs and sized made by a friend of mine.
Tolex will be smooth white and the grill will be oxblood.

Looking forward to your comments.

Regards
Loed

Sounds very good so far. Sorry folks, switching language:

Drawings for the housing are finished, here´s a 3D view of it.
parts are ordered...

Seems to be an interesting project Smile

Please publish your layout and pictures on this forum too!

... it´s alive and beautiful! compared to the Boss FRV-1 much softer and more room filling, err can´t explain. pictures will follow, need to play it Big Grin
tonite i´ll get the wooden box, by now i have the chassis and pan sitting on my desk.

This is getting along really nice!
I'm particularly impressed by the sophisticated spring-lock mechanism Cool

thank you, i´m also impressed by myself how good it turns out to become...

what mechanism do you mean? The pan suspension or the locking lever?

For the lever I can say, that imho the original solution is not so good, as the lever is moved back and forth and can loose itself if the bolt is not tight enough. With my solution with the rotating lever it securly keeps the pan locked at any time.

Some more facts: I built this from scratch. I made my own layout with a full wave rectifier, ground bus and autogroundlift instead of the original layout. A friend of mine made the wooden cabinet. I use smooth white Tolex and oxblood as this perfectly matches my amp Wink The pan suspension is made from springs from tube retainers and solder lug and standoffs.
The faceplate will be a laser engraved acrylic plate.

yes, the locking lever is an improvement on first sight! about the pan suspension - did you intend to prevent those springs from banging against the pan? seems interesting, maybe your tank would sound different, if it gets kicked?

Do the suspension springs at the original unit bang against the pan when kicked and is this audible?
To be honest i did not inted to keep the springs away from the pan. they are simply a bit to soft and to long, this was the only way to get it going. I needed to pull the springs very far, as the pan did not suspend properly at first.
Besides that it thunders nicely when kicked Wink

Great work! It looks fantastic so far. That pan lock is ingenious. Cool

I meant the whole contraption - looks like an improvement over the original design.

BTW what springs did you use to suspend the pan? They look pretty good. I just used a bunch of cable ties for the time being ... which is hardly a permanent solution. No

the springs are springs from tube retainers, this one:
http://www.tube-town.net/ttstore/product_info.php/info/p5271_Belton-Roehrenhalter---Retainer-2-19---Gross.html
I would use that one the next time:
http://www.tube-town.net/ttstore/product_info.php/info/p5270_Belton-Roehrenhalter---Retainer-1-12---Klein.html
as the springs are very long and quite soft so i had to pull them very far to get a proper suspension anfd floating pan, thus the distance between the suspension points at the pan and the baffle is quite big.

yes i also like my locking device, imho it´s the only way to carry out such a function. To be honest, when i first saw that lever in an original unit without seeing how it is attached to the bottom I thought the pan is locked by that thing by turning. So when i got more detailed pictures I was surprised that Fender uses a back and forth lever instead...

by the way, my pan is a TAD 4AB3C1B which looks quite similar to the MOD pans, I almost think it´s the same.
It drips nicely. sound samples will be on air soon!

you and irv 78 make me think of making one cause the price of reissue is ridiculous cost near a good amp for only 3 tubes
but i am afraid of high voltage and more over if it didn't work at the beguin ,it will be a big headhach to debug Shock

Very nice build !!! Yes Yes Yes

Hi everybody,

here are some soundfiles of my 6g15 tank...
recorded like this:
Jazzmaster, 6g15, Behringer USB Interface, Native Instruments guitar combo. (software that came with the interface).
i only edited pauses and made 192kbps mp3s of it, no compressors or denoising.

first dry and with reverb on 6 6 6

then with different settings, dry 666 101010 and a kick

and then some surftunes with backingtrack, reverbs on 666.
baja
the hearse
stringer
walk don´t run

playing mistakes are always intended, ok? Big Grin

have fun

The dilemma is how can you kick something that looks so neat?
