I can confirm the Yamaha THR10 does indeed surf. I bought one on Saturday and haven’t stopped playing it since, it is highly addictive.
I’m almost sure the amp and speakers are capable of a lower bottom end but the modelling seems to geared towards treble more so.
The bass control should be renamed cotton wool and the gain can get a tad crunchy and harsh a little too soon – imo.
But it is way better than the usual transistor honk honk sounding home practice amp. the sound is spectacularly open and spatial.
By Sunday afternoon it was in my friend Roger’s mini studio, i didn’t get a look in, he commandeered it and after 1-1/2 hours wild horses couldn’t drag him away.
We thoroughly tested it.
With Batteries, a powered microphone and a splash of Elvis delay you can really piss-off your wife and kids around the house.. it totally rules in this respect. Big Grin
Bass setting works surprisingly well. Acoustic setting with a tad of chorus & reverb is amazing. There’s enough distortion guitar demos on youtube...blah blah.
You can play it loud quietly and also quite loud. Loud enough to play along to.. a heavy strumming acoustic guitar with tambourine in a small folk club.
Running through Roger’s mixer & PA didn’t improve the sound at all, i kind of like the sound it makes on it’s own really.
Reverb and delay are respectable enough to play surf on the table of your living room for sure.
Clean & crunch settings work very well with my Jazzmaster but less so with my Strat. It sounds very much like the Supertones – The Wet Set.

Whatever you do, don’t ever lend a THR10 to a friend... you won’t get it back in a hurry!

I'm very impressed, especially by this video where this guy is multi-tracking with Cubase and all with the Yamaha THR10. About 7:50 he tries delay and spring reverb. Nice for surf. Watch the whole video. This guys is huge in LA. (LA-based studio guitar tech/producer/gear wizard Marc VanGool records an entire track using only a Yamaha THR10, Cubase AI6 and a 2008 MacBook.)

No! Thank You. You're the guy who brought this to our attentions.

Quick update, using Bass or Acoustic models with electric guitar (THR10 only) gives a much rounder and deeper sound - I'm 100% happy now (even though i'm British). Laughing

Quick update for anyone interested. Three new THR models:
THR10C
THR10X
THR5A
The "C" stands for clean and probably a better choice for surf, rockabilly, jazz & blues with EXTRA REVERB! and TAPE ECHO.
The "X" is more for metal type musics.
The "A" is aimed at acoustic players.

Don't know how I missed this thread the first time around. I bought a THR10 a few months ago, precisely for the reasons it's marketed. I play at home, in my office, usually after most of the family is asleep. Needed the flat and bass settings so I didn't get a THR5.

I love it. Very nice sound, does what I want. Real controls that act like real controls. OK, I don't like their effects controls so much. 2 multi-mode knobs. But I can live with it.

Again, I love how it sounds. And I love how you can turn down the volume while leaving the other controls where they are, and get the same sound at lower volume.

I'll tell you, I put my deferred Christmas present (Squire VM Jag) through it and the sound was winderful. I'm really looking forward to Christmas. And my other guitars sound as good through it, too.

Theses are still pretty attractive for $300, even more so if the tape delay is any good.
