I've always thought Neil was one of the best songwriters ever, so this was really cool to hear. Thanks Klas. The song reminds me of the Shadows, who if I remember were his biggest influence for his instro days.

I have a good friend who is a HUGH Neil Young fan and has all his albums.
But my friend laughts at surf music.
Wait till I show him this one, and tell him the facts. I always new Neil Young played surf at one time. Just about everyone did back then.

The rumor is that The Sultan will be on Neil's next vault collection. Of course he still has the master tapes! The original single is so rare it is made of unobtainium. Read Phil Dirt's review of the single at Reverb Central under the band name The Squires. Oh, and of course it sounds like The Shadows- Neil is from Canada!

Thanks for posting that, Carol! Neil Young was really into the
Shadows early in his career. Has anybody heard his cut on the
Shadows tribute CD, Twang"? Neil did "Spring Is Nearly Here"
with fellow Canadian Randy Bachman. It's pretty cool. There
are some good things on this CD: Peter Green's "Midnight" is
sublime. I like Steve Stevens' version of "the Savage", too.
Richie Blackmore's "Apache" is dreadful to my ears. Hank Marvin
himself covers "Rise & Fall of Flingel Bunt". Hank's guitar work is
great, but the modern drum sound ruins it for me. Other artists
on the CD are Mark Knopfler, Peter Frampton, Brian May, Tony
Iommi, Keith Urban & Stewart Copeland, Andy Summers, and
Bela Fleck. To me, most of this CD varies from mediocre to awful,
but the few good cuts still made it a worthwhile purchase for me.

Neil was just interviewed this week on Fresh Air. Terry brings up the Sultan and asks his thoughts. Unfortunately, he was rather dismissive of it and didn't really discuss instrumental music in any context. I was disappointed  She seemed to like it though!

dThis all happened in my home town of Winnipeg. Those 45's of The Sultan/Aurora were only sold at high school dances and local gigs so I'm always scouring garage sales for one of these uber rare 45's.
Lots of people on local musician pages relate stories of seeing Neil perform this and many other instrumentals at local dances.

I have been dragging my 15yr old son to shows I think are "important" Bob Dylan, Dick Dale and on Oct 8 we go to Cleveland for Neil Young. I bores the lad, but some of it has to be sinking in that nintento etched brain of his.
