Permalink Blast from the Past! The Upstarts c. 1997

Hey there SG101'ers, just wanted to share a couple tracks from back in my past. I was in a surf/rockabilly band with my brother in high school called the Upstarts, and he just sent me a copy of our demo tape. I hadn't heard these tunes in years, it really brings back memories.

My brother Ryan is on guitar, I am playing drums, and my uncle John is on bass. I was I think 14 at the time, and my brother was either 15 or 16.

This tune, "The Eye," is an original tune my brother wrote, that I think is a really powerful song. Its crazy listening to my 14 year old self drumming... I was so much less "careful" back then. Ryan gets some great surf sounds out of a Mexico Strat and a solid state Peavey.

Here is a rockabilly tune we wrote called "Nothin' Better to Do." Ryan shows off some great guitar work (especially for a 16 year old). Forgive the quality of the recording, we were using pretty substandard recording equipment, the best that a few teenagers could scrounge up anyways.

These tunes were so much fun to play! I miss this band! Times were so much simpler then. It used to be all the time in the world to play, but no money for decent gear. Now I have great gear, but no time! I guess thats part of being an adult...

Thanks! I remember the only way that we had access to surf music (besides the easy to find stuff at record stores like Dick Dale, the Ventures and so forth) was the instro/surf show they used to play on KSYM. We used to tape it on our little boombox. That's how we first heard Laika and the Cosmonauts, Man or Astroman?, and some great local surf. Were you in Squid Vicious? I remember one show we taped where Squid Vicious was in the studio (or was it the Soda Pop Spys?).

Yes, I played guitar in Squid Vicious. We played live on KSYM a few times, and then we played in San Antonio many times, usually with Soda Pop Spys. They really were one of the better San Antonio bands at the time.

We can thank Brian Parrish of KSYM for helping to make the scene so good.

Hello everybody, JStern's brother here. Yep, we recorded straight to a JVC cassette deck on these. Believe it or not, the guitar on The Eye was actually an Epiphone Les Paul Junior exactly like the one in this video. It had a convincing surf sound thanks to the P90's. Too bad the neck cracked in half, twice. I loved that guitar.

Ah yes, the Casbah on KSYM. I wonder if it's still on? It's how we found out that were actually NEW surf bands (in the mid 90s) pushing the genre forward. And some were actually from SA!

I'm glad you like the tracks Ted. It's a funny fact to me as I type this now, that I actually learned to play a Squid Vicious song I had on one of those taped-off-the-radio tapes!

Wow, I forgot you didn't have the strat yet when we recorded "the eye." That les Paul junior was a cool guitar. Yup, that was quite a recording rig, if I remember right a piece of junk radio shack mixer with a few nasty mics into our dad's jvc tape deck.

I'm not sure if there is a surf show on ksym anymore, probably not. Any time I tune in right now, the stuff alternates between decent alt rock from the 90s and complete garbage that must be too "hip" for me.

Crazy! And very cool!

Not sure if Brian's still at KSYM, but he does host a podcast:
