I put this up a while ago and will only keep it up until it hits 400 views so you should check it out. This tape was in Allen's closet--it is from a VHS tape so it is fuzzy and funky but you get to see the boys in action 23 years ago. Let me know if you like it... it is quite the comedy routine.

thanks

I like it!

Yes they play quite a few classics from The Ventures, The Shadows, Link Wray, Dick Dale, The Sentinals, and I've seen Jim play the entire soundtrack to The Endless Summer. I played drums with them once and we played Diamond Head which got us a $100.00 tip. But mostly I have been checking them out live since Burning Man 1996, and shooting video of their shows since 2000. That first song is called "Moment of Truth" by Dave Myers and the Surftones-1963.

We also played Latinia by the Sentinals from 1964. I love that song... it's been a favorite of mine for years. Here is the original:

Moment of Truth!!!!

Very cool to see this.

and people say the Mermen aren't surf.
silly rabbit, trix are for kids.

Jim's guitar sound is killer! Sounds big enough to swallow Jonah.

Makes me love 'em that much more. The Jim with hair era! Thank you Mr. Wheels.

Why pull it after 400 views? It's pretty historical for Mermen fans.

yeah I agree, please dont pull it down.

Jeff(bigtikidude)

OK! You guys can appreciate it for a while longer. It wasn't getting much attention so I figured why not turn you guys onto it? Jim is kind of a walking surf trivia library, he knows how to play just about every surf song written... it took me several years to figure out who/what/where to find Moment of Truth... so while we're at it here is the link to the original song:

enjoy!

Dave Meyers covered Moment of Truth. It was actually written by Larry Weed from the Original Surfaris. Here is a rare live version from the Original Surfaris:

Thanks for sharing that, Ken. Awesome video!

Bob

Awesome! The earlier days of the Mermen were the best IMO. The version of Latinia from Sunken Treasure is absolutely incredible.

Brian,
Thank you for clarifying that Larry Reed wrote Moment of Truth... some of this stuff is so obscure that it is difficult to pinpoint the origins.

kw

Dave Myers had a huge hit with his version of the song,
and its on many surf compilations.
That's why many people think they did it first.

The Orginal Surfaris version is harder to get,
as the Best of cd that Sundazed put out, it out of print.
and the other place to get it is on a Vinyl LP best of.

Jeff(bigtikidude)

It is quite obvious that Jim Thomas is a big fan of the first wave catalog. The "Live at the Haunted House" album has a lot of really great first wave covers on it.

Oh man, this video is soooo great!!! +1 for not ever taking it down...it's already proving to be a huge influence on those that are fortunate enough to see it!

Incidentally, probably the easist place to find The Original Surfaris' Moment of Truth is on Sundazed's Surf's Up! at Banzai Pipeline comp.
