I met the maker of the film, one Professor Karen Martin, when I was working at Rhino Records (store, not label) about 15 years ago. She is the world's authority and researcher on the enigmatic fish species called 'grunion', and came into the store looking for all the recorded songs on grunion ( see- The Halibuts, Frank Zappa, Jonathan Richman, and us Insect Surfers)! So of course I directed her to our 'Reverb Sun' cd, with the instro 'Grunion Run'. She also took me to a grunion run a few weeks later. I'd heard about how these lil' silvery-blugreen fish swarm up on the Pacific beaches April-Sept under a full moon, but for years I'd never caught any sightings. Turns out they come out on the SECOND night of a full (or new) moon! A very cool phenomenon!
You'll see hundreds on the beach at a time! Karen and her husband have remained Insect Surfer fans fer years now and so she used a lot of our tunes in her documentary! It's shown at a few film festivals now and I hope to see grunion trading cards, lunch boxes and action figures soon! Fin-tastic!
