All my wildest exotica dreams (with a nice surfy twang here and there), came true today when I listened to all three Tikiyaki Orchestra CDs for the first time. As an exotica fan from way back these albums were mind blowing, I still have goose bumps. From their heavenly grotto, Les Baxter, Martin Denny, and Arthur Lyman must be thrilled that their tradition is being so expertly continued. I must see you guys live, is there any chance of you coming to the East coast in the next year, Boston or New York?

They Have a few gigs coming up this winter/spring,
and I believe they are playing at a Big Tiki Event on the West Coast,
1 week after the Surf Guitar 101 convention.
Perfect Reason to come out for a Vacation in August I think.
( hint hint)
I am a Huge Tikiyaki fan,
and have been trying to turn surf people onto them 1 by 1 for a few years now. I think its really catching on.
Of course it helps that they are amazing.
and have some surfy guitars on some songs.
Them, the Blue Hawaiians, The Vanduras, and the Huntington Cads,
are some of my Desert Island discs for sure.

WOW!!!!!
What a humbling thing to read!!!!
Thanks so much for the kind words, LeRoy!
I feel extremely fortunate to be a part of such a unique and wonderful musical endeavor. I really can't describe what it feels like to stand in the middle of the "Orchestra" when all 7 guys are "on." It can be a very profound experience.
We get some flak from the Exotica traditionalists because we use modern electric instruments, but it's one of the things that helps give us our "sound." Not to mention, the whole thing began as a new, fresh, modern-day take on a blending of classic musical genres--like putting Exotica, Surf, Lounge, Jazz, Hawaiian, Cheesy Organ & Bongo Pop, and Film Music into a blender.
Unfortunately, there are no plans to make it to the East Coast right now, as much as we would love it! With 7 members, sometimes even playing locally can be a logistical challenge!!!
Our next shows will be Feb. 25 (TBA), April 21 @ Mojave Oasis II, and August 16 @ Tiki Oasis.
We were fortunate enough to have a track on The Continental comp #17 and will again feature a surf tune on the forthcoming Continental comp #19!
Here are the 3 albums so far....

And, I have to give very special props to my brother Bigtikidude for recommending me for the band! He played a huge part in making it happen for me! I will always be grateful for that!!!

I'm still goose-bumped. I listened to the three albums again today and they only got better. Even if I don't get to see you preform just knowing that you're out there is great.
I'm a fairly serious exotica listener, I've got my personalized, autographed copy of Martin Denny's "Quiet Village", up on the wall. Your twist on the music is brilliant, not to mention all the paraphernalia (the hotel room key is f-in amazing). Any true fan of the genre, should be thrilled that someone is keeping this stuff new and alive.

I am also a big Exotica nut, and I really dig the Tikiyakis. Their last album is downright amazing. They keep getting better and better.
Thinkmatic... you got a signed Martin Denny album??? I'm seriously jealous!

Yeah, a friend from the old exotica mailing list went and spent a couple of day's with Mr. Denny back in the early 2000s. Denny played the piano for him. It sounded like an amazing time. I had him take my "Quiet Village" album cover so Martin Denny would sign it to me.
Another acquaintance used to go and hang out with Juan Esquivel, but I never got his signature, sadly.

When surf/exotica curious friends ask me about music, I sit them down immediately and practically force them to spend some time listening to The Tikiyaki Orchestra! Seriously, they're amazing!!!
I've been lucky enough to hear them play once (at the Bali Hai in SD, with the hypnotic Medusirena, the fire eating mermaid dancing during their second set) and they are as great live as they are on their CDs!
They're all top-notch musicians, and it's really something to hear when they're all "on" and meshing together. Added bonus: the ones I've met are really cool guys too.
I'm going to throw Jungle Jetset on right now!

Hey Steve, thanks so much for the kind words! It's a truly humbling and rewarding opportunity to be a part of something like Tikiyaki. I'm so thankful to have been involved since the very beginning of the live band and can't express how much I've learned and grown over the years from playing in a septet.
The loss of the Verbtones is very sad indeed, but I'm beyond excited to hear what The Apollo 4 is going to bring to the table!
You guys should come down for the convention this year and stay through Oasis!!!

Another longtime Tikiyaki fan here. Stereo Exotique was the first exotica recording of any kind that I purchased (this being back in I believe Summer of 07, back when Myspace was THE social networking site.) and I've been indeed ecstatic about each successive release. Jonpaul, you and the guy's really have crafted an amazing sound, something quite unique indeed, and I can't wait to hear what the next album will sound like!

Picked up Aloha Baby after the convention some time last year based on Jeff/BTD's recommendation as being one of the more likely tiki / lounge-ish bands the Surf crowd would enjoy. Count me as a fan - you're one fan more towards your goal to merge the two scenes a bit more, Jeff!
Need to grab the earlier releases...

I really can't say enough great things about this band. After nabbing the first 2 albums earlier in the year, I grabbed Aloha Baby at the convention last year along with a shirt and a mug. I also have the DVD, but I can't remember if I got it at the 2011 or 2010 con... either way, it's great, too. Any and all of these albums are great to put on for so many different occasions and moods. I will constantly look forward to more releases from these guys. I'm just hoping I will get a chance to witness the show live. This is reason #763 why it's great to have DVDs of bands!

Hi JOHNPAUL,
What a great orchestra and music! How often do you all get together? To rehearse, to record, to write and to perform? Most of us have trouble getting 3, 4 or 5 guys together...you got 7! Would be stoked to read how you all manage.

Great to see the Return of Tikiyaki this past
Sun. Although it was only a 4 piece version of the band.
I found the songs played to be just as enjoyable
And recognizable as the cd versions.
They also played a spy medley that was very cool.
Long live Tikiyaki!

I sometimes play Stereoexotique in the background when I have visitors. It doesn't take long before someone says ..What are we listening to? I really like this, who is it?
