Hi guys, (sorry, maybe stupid) question: does anybody knows band/guitarest/cd/etc.. where the music is surf, but there are chicken pickin licks in the music (and when you're listening, you hear surf, not country)?
Thanks

I always tried it in the Aquanauts but Chicken Picken on a heavy strung short scale Jaguar was never an easy feat. Atleast the James Burton bend one string, choke it, and bend down to the other style.
Not really surf per say but Nokie did some crazy double stopped chicken picken on the Ventures Live in Japan '65.

Thanks the answer!
I left my band 6months ago, and now i can practice anything i want, but my son is 3 months old, and i cant practice loud stuff. So i started to use my fingers, instead of pick, after a while i realized: Im playin country/rockabilly licks!
im afraid, i'll leave the surf/instro style - but i dont want so, im trying to put these licks into my songs/music - its sounds little bit 'strange' - and i just want to hear what did someone else with this problem.

It all depends on how you play. I probably can play louder with just by fingers than with a pick It's all about your approach.
Also remember the James Burton style of chicken picking is with a flatpick and one fingerpick so the whole bare finger vs. pick thing should be the least of your concerns.
I say absorb all your can musically. The best thing that happened to me as a guitarist was to break away from playing just surf and try other styles on my own and in band settings.
How old are you?

Yes, I agree, after I started to work on this style I started to use the pick again, and now I play with hibrid picking style (pick + middle + ring). But now the most interesting/important question (for me) is not the technic. I'm worried - its not the best word, im not worried, Im curious - about the 'meaning of music'
Maybe there are people who think: Its pointless, to talk about 'meaning' of a 2-3 minutes long simple surf song, with 3-5 chords, its not a symphony - i disagree (and i think ever member of this forum do).
So my question is: what happens with the meaning (mood, color, i dont know...) of surf music, when the guitar player use this technic (because the country music brings me really diffrent moods, feelings, etc).
Now - because Im just playing alone, i cant decide it. maybe the next week I'll get some home recording stuff, and I can start to try these ideas with arrengment. It will be an interesting experience
oh, and im 32yrs old

Hi!
thanks the link! - funny
I know this song, its a little imitation, im searching for a guitarist/band, where this technic is an organic part of the music/guitarplaying.

Very funny, and pretty darn impressive too. I like their Surf Beat too. It's not exactly surf music, but here's Nokie finger-pickin' his way through Sleepwalk, if that helps. And anyway, it's simply beautiful.

Yeah a lot musically can be accomplished in a 2 min song. I'm just saying branching out and absorbing other styles can't hurt you as a guitarist. It might hurt you if you intend to be strictly a surf guitarist. But why limit yourself?
And at 32 you've got a lot of years to work on your style.

You may want to check out the Southern Culture on the Skids discography, they have a lot of crossover material that goes between rockabilly/country/surf. This is a singing song, but you get the idea. Deke Dickerson is also probably a great direction for you to go with experimenting with that style of playing.

There's a country backtrack available in the downloads section that someone may find useful as a jam along. I admire anyone's determination to learn finger-picking, or chicken-pickin, or claw style techniques. I always just stuck to flat-picking which was right in my wheelhouse.

I've found this '84 concert a few days ago. Nokie has a telecaster, he's playing with bridge pu. more country like sound, with bendings, double stops, etc.
cool
