Permalink Crate Powerblock into Super Reverb 4x10 cab

New Topic

The Super Reverb has a speaker load of 2 Ohms. The Crate Powerblock is a 150W transistor amp head with 8 and 4 Ohm outputs.

I want to have the Powerblock as a backup in case my (vintage) SR breaks down at a gig.

Can I plug the 2 Ohm speaker complex in the 4 Ohm output of the Powerblock?

Good question...Those Crate Powerblocks make excellent backups...they are loud, have a nice clean tone and don't take up much room in a van.

THE KBK ... This is the last known signal. We offer Sanctuary.

Not recommended with that type of impedence mismatch. You'll generally want an 8 ohm speaker connected to an 8 ohm output, 4 ohm speaker to a 4 ohm output, etc. With a load (cabinet) that has less impedence than what the output offers, you'll likely end up toasting the amp. It is possible to have a greater load and a lesser output, like a 8 ohm cabinet connected to a 4 ohm output. That will result in lower volume (not too noticeable), but the head won't fry.

I have 2 of the Powerblocks, one is a backup still in the box. They are great finds! They have a automatic shutdown built in so that if the amp is overheating, they will turn thesmelves off. That will be your biggest issue if the load is less than the output.

Maybe it's possible to reconfigure the speaker wiring for 4 ohms?

The solution is to get an extra speaker cable 1/4" - 2xSpeaker connenctors.

If my SR breaks down, I'll disconnect two of the 4 speakers and connect them to the extra speaker cable. Now each pair of speakers has 4 Ohm impedance. I'll plug the SR's speaker cable and the extra speaker cable to the two 4 Ohm plugs of Powerblock and I'll be ready to go.

That outta work. Just remember that the SR's speakers are really NOT rated for high power and don't crank it too much or "poof".

Brilliant solution!
