On a lot of classic era surf records, you can hear that the mutes on the Fender basses are still in - little foam rubber strips glued to the underside of the bridge cover. Anybody still play with the mutes on?

Carol Kaye still likes the foam mute approach. I use the heel of the attack hand while picking to mute.

What are the classic amps ? Good modern alternatives ?

I think I'd like to find a little surf band to play
bass with this summer. Anybody near Ventura County
Line?

As for surf bass gear, I am currently playing:
- '73 Fender Jazz, Squier SCPB, and OLP/EBMM StingRay
5
- Eden WXT 550 head (not thrilled with it, thinking
about getting an Ampeg PF500 and/or fixing up my old
blackface Showman)
- Ampeg cabinets: Portabass 1x12 or SVT210
- and a PICK! well, sometimes...

Of course, Bass VI or a Dano 6SB is a whole different
mentality and rig!

You should hook up with Stormtiger. His band posted on the Ventura County Craigslist looking for a bass player. They do it up right!!

You're not drunk if you can put your socks on while standing.

Good idea Stokemon, and thanks. In fact we already connected and I sent him here. Our excellent bassist Scott is moving away.

Should be fun, Stormtiger!

My last stint on bass was with a blues/power trio about 15 years ago. I still haven't put the chrome covers back on my P-Bass. None

Another vote for Bosco from the Atlantics; he had a really innovative style of playing, especially for that era. The Bass line on "Bombora" could have just about been considered punk in 1963; he also did some interesting double-stop stuff on "Come On".

This is one of their lesser known songs, but it's one of my favorites of Bosco's bass lines.

I hear ya, there! If I can hear the bass line clear enough, I can start picking it out.

Fast Cars & Loud Guitars!

I'm looking for the exact transcription (or notes) for the awesome "rumble" (LINK WRAY) I'm a guitarist and can do the riffs but I'm always in trouble for the bass part. Any help? in advance thanx! Fred

being able to be fluid and rhythmic and creative all at once while supporting the guitars and drums is what all about for me. I feel fortunate and humbled when I am able to pull it off.

Right on DP! I don't play bass all that often anymore but when I did that was pretty much how I tried to do things. A few weeks ago I played bass at a jam session and had the good fortune to work with a drummer that I found it easy to work with. We quickly linked up and worked as a team. It was a very nice feeling to be able to be a part of that.

When Surf Guitar is outlawed only outlaws will play Surf Guitar.

Do many of you bassists out there use hollowbodies? Our bassist uses a Vox Apollo sunburst hollowbody bass with black nylon strings. We've tried to interest him in a Fender, but he won't give up the Vox. Likes the sound and playability, so I guess to each his own. I was just curious as to whether it was all solidbody Fenders out there?

How's your digestion now?

Scott Esbeck from the Straijackets told me he used a hollow body Kay Bass on the original recording of University Blvd, I assume it was on the whole album since the tone seems the same throughout. He used a Fender Jazz for live work, except when they were sponsored by Squier. I can still recall them playing those white Squiers at Twist-n-shout here in Maryland.

I'm a Fender type myself, love the tones you get and they're reasonably comfy to play Smile

I'd just like to mention what a great job Ron Eglit did with Dick Dale over the past 20- years or so....he was right there for DDs whole resurgance and new albums and popularity..they had some great bass/guitar interplay and he knew when to GTF out of the way too.
I bet most everyone on this forum has seen DD with Ron on bass.

Surf bass! I'm right at home. Great topic guys!

Will most tube heads like showmaster, bandmaster etc do OK as bass amps as well?

New member of the Surf community! Great to find this thread!!!

Anyways, I'm in a fledgling Surf/Elecki band called 'Crazy Aces'. We've just recorded a record of originals & put together a video of sorts for one of the songs. Hope you guys dig it!

I dig it! you guys sound great. Album: When and where is it available?

I am a bass player first playing in a standard cover band Psycho Sushi (Seattle area)
and play guitar in my surf band, DeadSurf60's. I got used to being lockstep with the drummer while playing bass and it really helps with the groove while playing guitar. Instead of tippy toeing across the top I feel much more entrenched with the rythm section. I gotta get used to everyone looking at me though.

DeadSurf60's just had their first gig and got a request to play another one. I guess the crowd didn't hear the profusion of mistakes I made up on stage!
