Thanks for posting this... actually I am drumming in an alt rock band at the moment... or singer/guitarist wants to switch to something like a bass VI... so I am sending him a link to this hotness.

I have been eying this as well. He is sold out of the cream finish at the moment. I watch a few demos and it sounds pretty good.

What is the difference between a Bass VI and a Baritone guitar?

Also Noah, they can be different scale lengths. Generally bass vi's are 30" and baritones can be anywhere from 27-30".

Hmmm...so the advantage of one over the other still eludes me.

One is low, the other is REAL low. For me the baritone is more practical, occupying the sonic space between a guitar and bass. The bass vi is in the same range as the bass but offers a tonal difference. It is also great for guitarists wanting to play a bass with similar feel to guitar. Bass vi can be used to double bass or guitar parts or give you a really cool low melody that might just muddy up on bass. In my previous band, I only played the baritone as the guitarist and bassist were already filling up so much space on their instruments.

I am with Calacas on this one. I converted my Danelectro six string bass to baritone last year. It is really fun. But I am definitely going back to the bass VI mode. I could hardly put that thing down in that tuning.

Schecter has also come out with a newer version of the Hellcat VI with Seymour Duncah Jaguar pickups and a 30" neck.

...but still no trem
There's an Agile Argus longscale (aka cheap bass VI workalike) on Rondomusic right now, but in natural and they jacked up the price. Last time they had the surf green model in stock it was sold out after a couple of days.

I tend to think of the Baritone as the sort-of 'cello voice in an electric setting. Like a 'cello, a baritone is more of a melodic singing guitar-like instrument...
The Bass-VI is more of a low twang...The Ox or a bass-playing Duane Eddy style... or maybe something you'd use to double a guitar line for added depth, character or emphasis. A Bass-VI can also add extra "ooomph" doubling Fender Bass line...

Bass VI's (and sometimes Baritones) were often used to double Upright Basses to add a percussive edge (Roy Orbison, Patsy Cline, Elvis, ect). This is where they earned the moniker "Tic Tac Bass".
That Eastwood looks very tempting. I love my Danelectro Baritone & would dearly love to have a nice Bass VI to experiment with as well. It can have such as massive sound for instro stuff, such as Glen Campbell's Fender Bass VI solos on Galveston & Witcheta Lineman (funnily enough, he didn't even own the instrument; it was Carol Kaye's!!).
There's also been some really interesting alternative VI players over the years, such as Robert Smith from The Cure & Peter Hook from New Order. Just shows what a broad scope the instrument has.

Curtis, that's a really cool-looking bass VI, I had no idea this was out there. It seems a lot like my MIJ Fender Jaguar Baritone/Bass VI (except obviously 3 vs. 2 pickups):

I suspect the crafsmanship is pretty comparable, too, and probably better than many of those other bass VI/baritones listed above. Schecter makes good stuff, I think.

I had a lead on a Fender Jag Bass VI just like yours for $630 plus shipping, but the guy backed out. I've seen them sell for $1200 to $1400 on ebay and that's just too much, IMO. For that kind of scratch I could build a custom Warmoth Bass VI with a trem using actual Fender bits and Seymour Duncan pickups.
This new Schecter Hellcat VI is cool in that it offers actual SD vintage Jag pickups. I think that's a big plus. I read where you upgraded the pickups in your Jag VI as the stock ones weren't quite doing the job.
I just slapped a Warmoth baritone neck on one of my Strats and put a Duncan lipstick pickup in the bridge and have been having a blast lately. I'm sure I'll get something very Bass VI-ish in the future.
