NOT SURF, but if you like Erik Satie, Phillip Glass, early Pink Floyd, early King Crimson, Kraftwerk, Radiohead you should see the movie Heima. I can't recommend this film highly enough, I watched it 3 times in 2 days. The band Sigur Ros from Iceland returned home (heima) after a world tour and played a series of shows at some very unusual locations in their home country. Sometimes playing to just a handful of people, they set up in cafe's, town halls, town squares and sometimes out in the open in the middle of nowhere. They amazingly recreate their lush, orchestral sound using very conventional, sometimes primitive instruments. In one amazing scene all four band members are playing one large marimba-like instrument made out of rocks. There are plenty of guitars, but they seldom sound like guitars, they use a string quartet for most songs and a brass marching band in one special song. This definitely not a typical concert film at all, as much about Iceland and the people as the band, stunning imagery is abundant and beautifully photographed. It looks as amazing as it sounds. I found it a very uplifting and emotional experience, I know a lot of you will like as much as I did.

Truly amazing. And those pics don't lie one bit. It looks and feels just like that in Iceland. Had the pleasure of travelling around with a band last year for 17 days.
It's wild!

Always wanted to go to Reykavijk. Slightly offtopic, but interestingly, I just read this weekend that Iceland is officially bankrupt, the krona is valueless outside the country, and their provisional government has collapsed. Bummer. As well, England, Switzerland, and Belgium are all teetering dangerously. Scary world economy.

I bought this last year - it's absolutely breathtaking. I have to be in just the right mood to listen to Sigur Ros - if I'm really not in the mood for listening to them I don't have the patience to listen to their drawn out melodies and I can't help but think their singer sounds like the Swedish chef from the Muppets. If I'm in the right mood though, which is more often than not, their music is really beautiful. The DVD/movie blends amazing scenery with the band performing in unique venues all over the country. In many ways the DVD/movie sells the country more than the band, coming off like a video from the country's tourism dept. I'd highly recommend it!

I've found that listening to their music puts me in the mood. Brian Eno is another big influence on them that I forgot to mention. Another thing that I liked a lot is that the crowds at the shows ranged from infants to Grandparents and everyone seemed to enjoy the music. I, like many others, thought the singer was a female at first.

Bump, I watched this again over the weekend. It was even better than the first time. Their music is something really special once you learn which song is which.

Interesting, I hadn't heard of them at all. Radiohead were definitely my overriding thought on hearing the song in the trailer, but I love Radiohead so I'm intrigued. We get kind of used to seeing great landscape and nature photography these days but this does look classy. I wonder if it's available in Blu-ray - I'll check Amazon. Thanks for posting it.

Not blu-ray unfortunately. I wish, the DVD looks great though. I actually downloaded an HD version from the web that was taken from one of the HD channels here in the States. It is a torrent file in the .mkv format. VLC player can play it. And if you have a PS3, or anything that can play a .vob file you can use mkv2vob to make i a vob file so you can play on your TV.
It isn't the greatest file, but it is still much nicer than a standard DVD.

New Sigur Ros song available to listen to today!
Video with the song plays as you open the site: http://www.sigur-ros.co.uk/
Can't wait for the record, their DVD/Blu-Ray/Live Album they just released is more than worth the price of admission as well.
I wish that I could find enough like-minded people to play music like this with me. Not in a way to copy Sigur Ros, but this style of no clear verses or choruses, very open timing, ambient music is really what represents me best at the core, as far as musical expression goes.
