Permalink Lace Sensors & String Spacing

New Topic

Hello,

Knowing the differing opinions on the lace sensors, I read a post about the lace sensors having different volume level on up or down strokes. Is this so for the Strat? I have a very piercing Highway 1 that needs serious taming. I know there are better pickups, but the pickups on this 2001 Strat are piercing.

Thanks!

Check the bottom tone control. Turn it from one to 10 and see if you feel a click at about 5. If so, that is where the tone is flat. Putting it to 10 is actually boosting the treble. That may be why they pierce. Also you could just lower them down away from the strings to mellow them out.

I had a set of Lace Hot Golds in a Highway One Strat for a couple of years. I never noticed a difference in volume when doing up or down strokes.

The only thing about the Lace pickups is they are made using very weak magnets in order to get reduced levels of noise. This means the pickups need to be raised fairly close to the strings in order to get a decent tone.

I was constantly hitting the middle pickup while playing. I ended up lowering the middle pickup down near the pickguard and not using it. This isn't as bad as it seems, because the neck and middle position is pretty sweet with the Hot Golds.

Cats 'n' Strats, 'cause that's how I roll - I eat reverb for breakfast!

Thanks for the feedback. We have rehearsals coming up and I'll try the standard pickups first with the above suggestions. I put a base plate on the bridge which I'm not convinced made a noticeable difference. The Grosh Fat 60's uses a base plate, so maybe it's not entirely myth?

Also put a tone control on the bridge and it does tamper it, but sucks the tone even with a little bit backed off.

The "fatness" of a Strat tone mostly comes down to electronics doesn't it? Feedback welcome.

The Lace pickups I would get aren't the golds, they're the red, silver and blue from a Strat Plus Deluxe. A little hotter than the golds maybe?

Ah, the fickle guitarist continues his quest...After all of this I think Ivan was right about too much focus on pickups. I'll work on my amp as well, maybe use an additional EQ?
