Permalink who do you consider great songwriters?

Jan Berry - there, i said it.

Dave Wronski, Ivan P, Dalibor & Dinko, Brian Wilson, Franck Black Francis, Daniel Johnston, Tom Waits, Graham Parker, Jim Moginie, Lennon/McCartney...

Is there a difference between songwriter and composer?

Phil Sloan
Brian Wilson
Jan Berry
Steve Goodman

Fergie of the Black Eye Peas... Anybody?

These aren't surf, but they are some of my favorites -

Stevie Wonder
Bonnie Raitt
Anders Osbourne
Tommy Malone & et al - the Subdudes
Robert Johnson

Peace!

The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side.
- Hunter S. Thompson

Absolutely... that guitar riff she wrote for "Pump It" is just epic!

Stir the Pot

surf: Frankie Blandino
non surf: Tom Waits & Kathleen Brennan

Rock/Metal
Alice in Chains, Primus, SoundGarden, and
of course the greatest riff master off all time Toni Iommi of Black Sabbath

Jeff(bigtikidude)

Me and Lord Hunt have a profound apreciation for Alice In Chains. Never encountered another band that can drag you into the dumps like they can. In My opinion Jerry Cantrell is one of the most amazing guitar players on the planet, And layne's voice was just fucking beutiful.
Also like...Elliott Smith
Love And Rockets
Satans Pilgrims

Happiness is being a surf musician that actually surfs. Ride Lord Hunt Surfboards!!!

Its always nice to know when other surf heads appreciate
some of the same rock/metal bands that you do.

thanks for making me feel not insane. Rolling Eyes

Insane is right. I cant count the times that I was mocked for admitting that AIC was my favorite band.Oh well. Different strokes i guess.

Speaking of Different Strokes, Alan Thicke and Gloria Loring who wrote the Different Strokes theme song are pretty brilliant. They also wrote the theme to The Facts of Life. Very Happy
Seriously though. JOE RAPOSO

How bout some love for Sonny Curtis?

We're gonna make it after all.... Guitar

Seriously though, Sonny Curtis.

The Thunderchiefs

My top ten (writing duos and teams count as one each):

Walter Becker & Donald Fagen
Mike Lieber & Jerry Stoller
John Lennon & Paul McCartney (but McCartney sucks without Lennon)
Mick Jagger & Keith Richards
Lux Interior & Ivy Rorscharch
Steve Harris, Dave Murray, Adrian Smith, Paul Di'Anno, & Bruce Dickinson
Rick Ocasek
Vangelis
Bryan Ferry
Prince

Yeah, no surf, and only one instrumentalist. Deal with it. (LOVE surf, but
I can't say that any are in my top ten of "great songwriters.")

Also sprach Vincent Razz

Is this something you can share with the rest of us, Amazing Larry?!?

===>Heh heh. . . I forgot to add the Bauhaus guys to my list
(Love & Rockets + Peter Murphy = Bauhaus), so I've gotta add:

--Bauhaus
--Joy Division/New Order
--DEVO

Joy Division, Shane, is one group that can bring you down further than
Alice in Chains any day.
