Man, there are way too many concerts out there that I'm missing. Why's this one gotta be in Santa Cruz?

Because thats where the surf is, by the Beach, hop on a bus, or talk some people iinto going with you. I bet Doug Snyder from Reno will be going to this, Too bad he never answeres his e-mail I'd put him in touch with you,and he could pick you up on the way there.

I don't think I'd actually go, though. That was more just hypothetical bitching: thinking/typing out loud. Plus, without a fake ID I can't get in if that place is a bar, which looks like the case. Thanks anyways BTD.

Well I am not a music critic, but I will try my best to give a review of the show and try not to ruffle any feathers or sound like a dummy. I am only doing this because the Big Tiki Dude couldn't make it cause he is illin' and Danny asked for it. Believe me this won't become a regular gig.
The good news for all the Mer-heads and Shi-tones fans who filled Moe's Alley is that the music sounded pretty tight although there were a few false starts the band obviously came to rock. Jim and Jennifer did what they do best when jammin' with each other and Shig rocked the skins very impressively. After playin' a short set Jim talked a bit out his connection to the Endless Summer Soundtrack and threw out some interesting triva before the Shi-tones tore into the songs from Endless Summer. I dug it the music and thought it was pretty cool. This was my first time getting to hear Shig play live and it was a treat. The Shi-tones sound was not too loud or over the top and it sounded very well mixed by the sound guy. The same goes for the Merman. I have never seen the original line up play together before so I really can't compare it to anything but it all sounded like it should. I am kinda familar with Krill Slippin' and thought all in all the sound and performance by the band was pretty good and very Mermanny. It was apperent the bands were all havin' a pretty good time. It was very much a party type atmsophere because it was somebody's birthday that the musicians knew. Between sets a local Hula Dancer came out and performed some hula to a few contemporary Hawaiian songs played over the P.A. and dedicated them to whoever this Sonny, Songie, Spoungy birthday person is. I dunno...I am not a member of Club Merman. Don't get me wrong, I like the Merman as much as the next cat but it's not my preference for surf/instro tunes.
I took a standing position by the sound board because usually the guy doing the sound is mixin' for what he is hearing and if you are near his location you can get a pretty good feel for what he is tuning into. Also they remodeled Moe's a bit and now have a couple huge doors by the sound booth that helps keep the inside from getting too hot and claustrophobic. The joint was pretty much packed and the only place where I could try to watch with out being bumped around by drunks and the Mermen dancers. I didn't stay for the whole show and left around 12:30. I was tired of getting bumped and it was pretty cold standin' by the door all night.
<rant>The crummy part of the show is that Moe's Alley layout is pretty lame. When you walk in the front door is right by the stage so you have to fight your way past the people crowdin' the stage. Also the bar is right next to the doorway so that makes just getting through the door even more difficult. I couldn't see the band or Jami's light show, which is one of my favorite things about the Mermen shows, because the stage isn't very high and the ceiling is low With various posts scattered to help block your veiw. Moe's is not a very big place and any large crowd becomes very intimate. I am not really into sharin' my personal space with people I don't know and like to have my elbow room. I found myself havin' to brace myself and hold my ground against the ding-dongs who don't understand that physics won't allow me to pass through walls or become smaller just because they want to pass by or talk to their friends who are standin' by me. You can only amaze at the stupids who, even when they have the room to move out of the way, only move a fraction of an inch when you are trying to get by them with two glasses of beer filled to the rim. Then they give you the dirty eyeball when you spill it on there shoes. I guess I just don't have the patience to handle crowds of people as well as I used to. Either that or people are getting more and more inconsiderate and stupid. </rant>
I am glad I got out from under my rock and caught the show. Though I think it may of been more enjoyable up at the Brookdale Lodge so long as the PA and sound guy were workin' proper. And there you have it my first and probably lase gig review for Surfguitar 101 please send donations to chongolio@lost-isle.com.
Thank you goodnight.

Chongolio,
thanks for the report back.
sounds like your getting old and grumpy.
Welcome to the club. I hate crowded clubs that are not fun to be at
(i.e. laid out properly) also.

Nope Chongolio, it's always been that way. Since I put you up to this review, let me be the one to thank you. Even though it seems to have memorialized a night you'd rather forget. I do enjoy the Shitones quite a bit and have the good fortune to see them at my pleasure, as they play almost every Thursday in San Francisco. If you make it up here some week let me buy you the first pitcher.

Hey thanks for the replies and offer of free beer. I didn't mean to come across too crusty and jaded. I am very glad I went and caught the gig. The show (what I could see of it) and music was very cool and I got to talk with a couple freinds. I don't mind people dancin' and usually get a kick out of watchin' them. I just don't like being kicked by them. And please don't get me wrong about Moe's. It can be a cool place to see and hear music if it's not too crowded, which I know is the opposite of what the band and the house want. Unfortunatley, it doesn't take very many people to make Moe's crowded and just a few jerkies can disrupt the vibe very easily because there is no escape from them. I am just not a crowd person and think it kind of defeats the purpose of going to see a show when you can 't see the performers. I wasn't sure what to expect as far as a turnout because usually the attendance at surf shows is pretty lackluster especially for a town who went into the ring over the name "Surf City." But again The Mermen are not your run of the mill "surf" band and have a very dedicated fan base.
Time to take my geritol,
Chonglio

One of the reasons I chose to play in bands and rarely go to see them. That, and anyone who knows me, knows that I am old and crusty.

I'm too isn't that much into seeing live bands anymore and I usually head for the bar after just a couple of songs. Maybe it has something to do with the bands though. Or me getting old. Or both.

The Mermen portion of Friday night's show at Moe's Alley
in Santa Cruz has been uploaded to Archive.org. This was
the show where they played "Krill Slippin" in it's entirety,
plus a couple other songs. Original Mermen monster bass
guitarist, Allen Whitman, is on board for this show. The
recording is by Mermen archivist, Steve Brown. It is a rough
mix, presumably to be remixed and uploaded in a more
polished form at another time. The Shi-tones portion of the
show ("Endless Summer" in its' entirety) has not yet been
uploaded.
Downloads at Archive.org are free. Besides over 60 Mermen
concerts, there are some MOAM and Surf Coasters shows at
Archive.org, and a gazillion non-surf bands, all for free, band-
sanctioned download.

It sounds pretty good. And what's better, I just saw that they recently uploaded their show from last September at 19 Broadway. I've been waiting for that thing to show up for... almost six months now. I was there, outside on the sidewalk with my sister through the whole thing. My first Mermen show and second ever surf show overall.
Man, Mermen fans are weird.

LOL oh man my sides are killing me, I'm laughing so hard.
I always thought that a bit before.
But with all the bacon and hula hoop references
by members of their yahoo group.
I'm thinking its more and more true.
gotta love those "Free spirits"
I just dig the music....
