An artist, innovator, genius!

Here's a nice little collection of images from the Petersen Museum.

INDEED! The Peterson has had his cars on and off through the years. I never get tired of looking at them. So ahead of their time! He created The Outlaw in 1959! A lot of his car creations are at Galpin Auto Sports now, just a few miles from my home in Van Nuys. I pop in there just to check 'em out often. Roth, without a doubt, is one of the great hot-rod/custom culture pioneers of all time, but he's also one of the great pop artists of our time too.

Needless to say, Ed Roth have been a big inspiration for us in the Surfites.

Another cool website to check out is www.mrgasser.com which is dedicated to his show cars. Roth was actually personally involved in creating it just before he passed away.

Long live his memory!

Cool shot of the Surfite, Klas. What is that photo from?

I just got the latest issue of Hot Rod Magazine in the mail today and it features an awesome spread "Where it all Began" with Ed Roth and Weirdos.

For those that don't know, Weirdos aka "Monsters in Hot Rods" shirts first appeared in the pages of Car Craft. And the first man to sell them in those pages was Ed Roth. In the August '59 issue Weirdo Shirts had become a full blown craze with Roth at the forefront of the movement.

These pics are from the Car Craft archives. So, when you guys see a t-shirt that looks like these you can thank Ed Roth!

The snapshot is taken from the 1965 movie Village Of The Giants (which also had that great dancing scene featuring Jack Nitzsche's "The Last Race").

And yeah, Big Daddy monster shirts rule!

And for anyone who wonders where the great Wax 'Em Down comp got its cover image:

Oh yeah, I really dig Village of the Giants! What's not to dig about a 50ft tall Joy Harmon go-go dancing in slow motion! Big Grin Great music by Jack Nitzche too!

Here's a pic of Roth and The Surfite I scanned from ROD & CUSTOM Feb '65...

Funny that I got into Eddy Roth before I knew that surf music/culture existed.

I was super goth and he did the album art for the Birthday Party's Junkyard album. That and I had a rat fink shirt that said, "I hate every cop in this town. A good cop is a dead cop."

I used to build his model cars when I was a kid.

I just bought myself one of these a couple months ago (the black one with the Rat Fink character)....

There are no wrong notes, just some questionable choices.

Anyone else remember the "Leave it to Beaver" where they got the monster sweatshirts?

this link has pic's and also some pic's of one of Roth's that he did for a kid back in '61

"Maybe there aren't any surf bands; there's only surf music?" Tuck

Yep, I've seen those pics from '61, Scott. Totally awesome!

The Leave it to Beaver episode with the Weirdo shirts is super cool too. It was obviously a pretty big craze if they wrote an episode about it. Way cool!

Cool, I don't think I had seen that photo before. Notice the reference to "Surfville" as well!

Yep, that movie is a blast! Here's some more early Roth ads I scanned from CAR CRAFT magazine from May, June, and July 1960...

I think my all time favorite Roth show car is the Beatnik Bandit. Can't afford the real deal but I got a really nice 1:18 scale metal die-cast model of it. (Not mine in the pics though).

Time for a Monsters in cars reissue, I remember them in the car mags and always wanted one... Or ten.
