Permalink The Madeira CD release show TOMORROW with the Cocktail Preachers, the Mystery Men? - WEBCAST!

Hello! I thought I'd post a travel update as to The Mystery Men?'s status since I'm a passenger & not a driver! We (Jamie, Richard, Terry, Jay & I (Jay's fiancé, Cindy) met at 6:30 this morning and quickly got on the road after two quick stops for caffiene & octane. As we were entering Chattanooga, we started to see darker skies & drizzle. Drizzle turned into downpour with water beginning to pool on the highway & strong wind gusts noticeably nudging our cars about 15 or do miles outside of Murfreesboro. As we came upon our exit for a much needed pit stop in Murfreesboro at a gas station/McDonald's, the skies fell extremely dark and the air was thick and still with bursts of wind now and again. (I worked for the weather channel for 4 years & Jay & I are admittedly weather geeks & we felt as though something was definitely afoot!) The air was completely still by the time we came back out to our cars. Back on the road we went. By the time we were halfway to Nashville from Murfreesboro, 3 tornado warnings were reported in Murfreesboro and it's close surrounding areas! Apparently we just made it outta there!

Currently we're in Kentucky, 35 miles outside of Elizabethtown & although the skies are chock-full of clouds, we've seen the sun & we haven't felt rain since TN. However we're far from in the clear. We're hearing reports of schools closing early due to tornado warnings following the rest of our route on I-65 right into Indianapolis!

Regardless of the impending weather situations, we're all looking forward to the show tonight! I was excited to read that the show will be broadcast live via webcam! Fantastic!!

Well, that's all of an update I can give for now. I'll be sure to post again should a flying cow spin upon us!

Cross your fingers for The Mystery Men? for continued safe travels!

~ Cindy

I'm about to leave for Indianapolis (3+ hr drive). North Indiana has some storms, but nothing compared to the complete nightmare going on in southern Indiana and Kentucky right now. Dear God. I don't know where the Mystery Men are at the moment, but I really, really hope they're nowhere near northern Kentucky yet. I'm truly worried about those guys, they might be hitting some horrific weather. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

Amen.

This is Noel. Reverb's at maximum an' I'm givin' 'er all she's got.

I am sitting here at work listening to the Tornado Sirens going off. But I just can wait to get out of work and head to the show! I ordered a external microphone for my camera hopefully it will make listening to the stream better. My camera is not HD, but it usually does a pretty good job. I figured since I would be recording it anyway, all I needed was a computer, cables and an internet connection. I hope it works pout well.
Thanks
Guy

its working now,
refresh your browser, and it should start playing

yeah, I think that is the program, or the stream, not the room.

Jeff(bigtikidude)

Yes, it seems a little better now though. Or I'm just getting used to it.

All the technical difficulties seem to be cleared up. It's a lot better than at the beginning. People seem to be jumping in and out of the viewing stream. This is a great idea. Kudos for doing it.

I've really enjoyed the show so far, but my dog isn't so sure; the early sound quality drove her upstaira. She's back now, on the sofa next to my wife.

If you were unable to catch the stream live last night, most of it has been archived here: http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/20844685

I was unable to watch last night, but was stoked to find this link and am watching it now. Great set guys, and it sounds like you had a good crowd there (very enthusiastic bunch, especially up near the stage!)

Well, wow, what a fun night that was!! SO RELIEVED that the Mystery Men made it without any problems, which really was a near miracle! (They were tracking the storms on their iPhones, and apparently were on the back edge of them a big chunk of their drive.) They really rocked the house, and sounded great, with several new songs which are just fantastic, with one on which Richard and Jamie trade off on lead, so cool. The (burn-victim?) masks they wear are completely freaky and unsettling, as well as quite original! Definitely makes them look mysterious! The guys are such great players, and excellent songwriters, and it was a true pleasure to have them there, thank you very much for coming, and for not bailing the night before after seeing the forecast. That took some serious cajones... Seeing them play made me realize that I really need to listen to their debut EP "Session Obscura" a lot more, which I promptly did yesterday - twice! Highly recommended! though I'm also greatly looking forward to their next release, judging on the quality of the new material they played on Friday.

The Cocktail Preachers were also just 'on', playing a tight and varied set that I dug the hell out of! As did the audience, I should add! Man, the talent in this band is just off the charts! Steve has become a truly outstanding lead guitar player, playing with great skill and feeling. Phil Tiki on bass is the very epitome of what a surf bassist should be, melodic, tasteful and always in the pocket (though he engaged in some Fender-blasphemy by playing an orange hollow-body Gretsch OMG - but damn, he made it sound awesome!). Phil truly gets this music, it just emanates from his every pore. The band's secret weapon is Bruce, who - not exaggerating one bit - excels at lead, rhythm AND steel guitar! His steel playing really gives the band a distinctive and personal sound, as does their mixture of exotica and surf - though they can definitely rev it up when they want to! Their new drummer (a full-time medical doctor, no less!) is excellent, too, and definitely 'gets' surf music, playing with great skill and taste. The Preachers are really hitting on all cylinders right now, as evidenced by their 2011 CD "Intoxicating", which I also checked out yesterday - I'd say it's probably the best thing they've done so far, a fantastic mini-album! Again, highly recommended! Thanks so much for coming again, guys! It's always a real pleasure to play with you.

(I should add that all the bands used our gear, which made changeovers so much more easier - and damn, both bands sounded SOOO GOOOD playing thorugh our amp line-up of a Gomez Surfer with a 2x15" JBL-D130F-loaded cab, '64 Showman with a 1x15" EV-SRO-15L-loaded tone-ring cab, and a '66 Showman with a 2x15 JBL-D140F-loaded cab - sounded simply awesome!)

I was amazed that almost the entire crowd had stuck around for our set, which started around 12:45 am. I didn't think we played as well as we're capable of, but it was OK. Given that we were playing a bunch of material which we had never (or rarely) played before, and that we haven't played a show in three months and were a bit rusty, it went pretty well, I guess. We got a great audience reaction, which was really nice, thank you all. The biggest shock was the reaction that the world premiere (so pretentious!) of Pre-Ritual/The Ritual got, the latter part of which especially we didn't think is the sort of a thing that would go down very well live, but lo and behold, it did! After we played the album, we played another six older tracks, and were ready to wrap it up. It was probably after 2 am at this point, but unbelievably, the audience was not done! They kept shouting 'More! More!" Mr. Green That was a real surprise, and boy, did it feel good! We were a bit reluctant, but in the end whipped out ramshackle, unrehearsed versions of Dilmohammed, The Victor and Night Rider, which ended the night on a real high!

We ended up hanging out at the club until 3:30 am, chatting away, selling CDs, enjoying ourselves. Afterwards, Dane, three of the Mystery Men (all staying at Dane's place) and I ended up going to Steak'n'Shake afterwards, having a blast together, but not getting to bed until 5:30 am. Yikes! I left by 11 am the next morning, and the Mystery guys were all still passed out.

all in all, what a night! Definitely memorable! Also for the fact that I broke a string in the fourth song of our set! Breaking a string at a show hasn't happened to me in probably ten years. I guess I got a defective string. And it had to happen right in the middle of a solo, too - doh! (Huge thanks to Preacher Steve for changing the string for me, that was a saintly think to do!! I owe you one!) I had all sorts of technical problems that night, my power adapter for my pedals acting up, and then my tremolo footswitch not functioning and not turning on the trem. Grrrr.... (I kinda suspected that might happen, it's been acting up a bit lately, so I brought a new spare switch, but left it in my car - so, Steve was again kind enough to get it for me. I guess I owe you two!) But I had to get it out of the packaging and set it up on stage in between songs. How NOT to be prepared, boys and girls! But whatever, we had a blast.

Thanks to all you SG101-ers that were there for coming - especially the huge Ohio contingent that trekked hours to be there! We were really blown away by that - THANK YOU! And thanks to all of you that tuned in for the webcast - and of course, to Guy for setting it up and sorting out all the technical problems! I watched a part of the video, and it seemed quite good given the chaotic circumstances!

So, Tribal Fires is off to a good start - now, off to conquer the world with it! Rolling Eyes Very Happy Hope to see many of you this and next year - this year in North Carolina, Chicago, Milwaukee, California and all around Indiana, Ohio, Michigan and Illinois! Next year... maybe across a large pond???

This was such a great idea it has to be repeated. I think Ivan is right about everything he wrote about the Mystery Men and the Cocktail Preachers, and too hard on himself about how The Madeira played, himself especially. They played great and their entire set was fabulous.

The feed cut out intermittently and I guess we missed a lot of music after 2:00 AM. I hooked my PC up to a home theater sound system and it sounded great after the early technical difficulties were solved. It was a great way to spend an evening and, if not as good as being there, it was certainly the next best thing.

I think this kind of webcast has the potential to bring surf music to a wider audience. I'd like to see more of it where possible.

Thanks Ivan, Patrick, Dave & Todd for letting us use you equipment and allowing us to condense and make the trip easy. The show was a lot of fun!! We had a blast performing and watch the Mystery Men? and Madeira. A big part of the fun of these multi-surf bands shows is watchin the other bands perform. And both Mystery Men? & Madeira didn't dissapoint. The Madeira encores were the highlight for me from the night that and Tangaroa (love that song!). Anyways, the crowd was great. I seen a lot of freindly & familiar faces in the crowd. I was suprised to see so many folks that drove from far away too. Dedicated surf fans!! Guy thanks for making the effort on the webcast really nice touch to a special event. I especially appreciate the Madeira for inviting us, I really dig the new CD worth the wait.

One other random note, any one else ever notice how people take pictures of their favorite song? Like looking at a photo can tell you how that song sounded? Its kina funny and I've notice pretty often. Phil was guilty of that as well Friday!

Hello,
I had a bunch of technical problems getting the stream working acceptably. Big kudos goes out to Big Tiki Dude! Jeff was i contact through text messaging giving me feedback about the stream and suggestion to solve the issues. You can thank him for things getting better in the later parts of the broadcast.

For the first time ever ustream's web app would not find my camera. I tried everything and ended up downloading their free stand alone app and using it. But it had limitation including not being able to control the audio source. I think that the app was getting audio from both the camera and the computer's mic. I think that is what was causing most of the distortion and the echo. Jeff suggested that could be causing the problem. Later during the show I had stuff covering up the mic input on the computer. My camera does not handle the loudness to well. Bik Tiki Dude suggested covering the camera Mic with napkins or something. I had a hand towel and the mic is right under the lens so I tied the towel around the lens covering the mics. It was still too loud, Jeff was suggesting taping the towel over the mic. I did not have any tape(note to self always bring tape). Instead I had a short ethernet cable so I used it to tie the towel on tight and that is how it was during the Madeira set. Earlier during the Cocktail Preachers set I had the towel on but it was not tied down. You may have seen the towel a few times because it slipped over the edge of the lens. During the Mystery Men's set I tried the new condenser mic and it was too loud. Tried the condenser mic backwards away from the music and the camera mic. During all of the above Big Tiki Dude was giving me feedback about how it sounded.

I had a 150 foot ethernet cable connected to the router in the Melody Inn. I don't think that wireless would have worked too well.

The Melody Inn is a relatively long and narrow building. The stage is in the front by the front door. The band is pretty much facing across the width of the building. That is too close to get the whole band in view at once. Whenever I tape a band I try to keep the instruments in view. I am only about 5'8" and the tripods I have are only about 5' tall. at the Melody inn I usually stand on a bar stool directly across from the bands, but I would have had no room for the computer and other stuff. So I bought a step ladder with a tray and 3 steps on it. I stood on the ladder almost all of the time holding a monopod. That is why the camera move so much, sorry about that. The laptop was on the tray leaving just enough room for the monopod to rest on the tray in behind it.

It made it a lot harder to deal with the computer/sound problems trying to hold the monopod in place and climb down the ladder to work on the computer. since I could not se the computer screen when there were problems I could not see the screen. The last issue i had was that the network at the bar was blocking my access to do stream so i had to VPn into my network at work in Ohio and send the stream from there.

I would do it again in a heartbeat. I have learned some things i need to do to be better prepared in the future.
Wink

Also it was not until the Madeira set that I saw the record option and used it. So the only thing up on Ustream is most of the Madeira set.
I have a question for you, should I load up the Mystery Men and The Cocktail preachers sets to Ustream? Or should I load up the individual songs on my Youtube channel?
Thanks
Guy
