And this one that I played on the RFB Halloween Special. 1960! Viva la Pac NW Instrumentals! You can't deny the influence of the Ventures, Wailers and the above bands on the formative years of surf. Even if the purists say it isn't surf...

Good thing he gave up the drums.

Something's just a little off rhythmically, maybe it's somebody else in the band. Anyway, he turned out to be a better frontman.

Indeed! Many often say that surf music is a uniquely California trend, but actually the roots lie elsewhere especially the Pacific Northwest with The Ventures and The Wailers. The "surf sound" was there even though it had yet to be named as such.

Just ran across this one on youtube tonight. Kool Aussie surf with some nice steel guitar leads.

-Damon.

This so related I had to link to it here. From the home page.

"Old Wild Men is dedicated to the unsung heroes of rock & roll. The purpose of the website is to capture and display the images and stories of amateur and semi-pro bands, groups and combos from the 1960's and 1970's. With photos and comments from the band members themselves, the aim is to present an affectionate and humourous pictorial history."

They feature the Lelands who started out as the Hawaiian Shadows, shown here.

Here's the Website. http://oldwildmen.smugmug.com/

Check out this tune from 1960 featuring Nokie Edwards and Gene "The Draggin' King" Moles on guitar. NIGHT RUN by The Marksmen (different Marksmen than the David Marks band). I know Teddy will dig the long surf rolls in this one!

Occasional lurker, first post. Surprised this one hasn't come up yet...

Roemans - Miserlou

Scratch that- let's try again...

Roemans - Miserlou

One more- allegedly backed by Bob Vaught and the Renegaids/Renegades

Runky - Charles Wright

Always dug that wild version of Miserlou by The Roemans. Gotta love those screaming chicks going nuts. What the heck were those guys doing!

Here's another boss wave-rider from the early 60's. Crash by The Creations. You can practically smell of the surf wax and salt water on this one!
