Another Monster 45 from 1962... Headache by The Citations. I first heard this on the comp, STRUMMIN' MENTAL Vol 1. These kids must have downed a couple of six-packs of soda before cutting this one! Amazing hi-energy stuff!

was Jolt Cola around back then?
Shock

Here's a few more to give this thread a bump. Another tune from the Breakers, followed by two more from the Emeralds.

-Damon.

Good stuff!

Check out MACH ONE by The Chancellors with some insane double-picking...

And SURFIN' THUNDER by The Tradewinds. These guys were surfin' in OMAHA in 1963! Smile

Here's another great single from 1960 that pre-dates the term Surf Music but clearly has the feel... Avalanche by Don and The Galaxies.

I continue to just adore this thread! The playlist Morphball made on YouTube is the icing on the cake.

KEEP 'EM COMING!! Big Grin

Another set of 3, startin' it off with another surfin' bird.

-Damon.

Boy some of these rare singles are really pushing the limits.
Some showing garage sounds, and some really fast intense double picking
which would later come into play in metal.

Jeff(bigtikidude)

Awesome additions! Always dug Surfin' Crow by The Jades, And Hangin' Five by The Reveliers has some killer drumming and great in-your-face guitar tone.

Here's some surf sounds from the Pacific Northwest...

Before Paul Revere & The Raiders became well known they cut this single, Orbit (The Spy) in 1960. This pre-dates what would happen in So-Cal by a year, but check out the super surfy break and whammy bar dives especially at the end. Pure Surf.

The Raiders were no doubt following in the footsteps of pre-surf pioneers from the Pacific Northwest, The Fabulous Wailers. The Wailers were also a big influence on The Ventures. Check out their tune from 1959, Wailin' which lays down the groundwork for what would later be called surf.

The Phantom 5 - Graveyard

According to the YouTube poster, this is around 63/64 from Indiana.

It's true Phantom 5 were from Indiana. It makes me proud to know that surf was indeed alive here in Indiana even back in the 60's.
Now if only I could find my hometown of Anderson's own The Majestics "Safari" on YouTube.Just when you think almost everything should be on YouTube by now sadly we're not even close. No

Reverb, It's A Way Of Life!

Thanks for posting the Wailers and PR & the Raiders Norman! It relieves me of being accused of "stretching it"...;)

Heeha! Thanks, Ted. That Raider's tune is so surf you can shoot the curl on every groove of that disc, yet it pre-dates Let's Go Trippin' by a year. The story goes that The Raiders shopped the song around L.A. in '60 and all the labels turned them down. Hmmmm, very interesting. Big Grin

That Phantom 5 Graveyard song sounds very similar to a song we used to wear out listening to as kids in the '60s. I just can't remember the name.

It was on a blue label, maybe had Deltone on there somewhere. I thought that maybe it was Dick Dale, but could not find it in his album listings.

A difference with Graveyard is that at the end of the verse when the pause happens, there was a loud scream. This surf song was probably one of the first horror crossovers.

Anybody have any ideas about who recorded it or what it was called?

Paul

Had to post this nasty teen garage take on "Outer Limits" by Ann Arbor, MI's Iguanas, featuring Jim Osterberg on drums. You might know him better by other monikers...
