I had the pleasure of playing rhythm guitar alongside Ritchie in a number of sessions back in the '60s, mostly Gary Usher productions including (among others)some Hondells album tracks and Superstocks hot-rod tracks.
I was asked a few years back to record "Stranger From Durango" for the intended RP tribute CD, and I was disappointed that this project never came to fruition. So this now seems like the appropriate place to dust off that track and share it with you:

Paul, that's really beautiful! Thank you very much letting us hear it!
A Podolor track that I always loved (and there are SO many!) was Rising Surf. LOVE the middle-eastern tonalities in that one. Really glad that I got to play it during the Convention jam last year with Danny, Jonpaul and Jeff! (Starting at the 2:20 minute mark in the below video, if you want to check it out.)

Breaking news, breaking news!!! Podolor used both a '51 goldtop Les Paul and a '61 three-pickup Les Paul/SG with a vibrato on all of those instrumental tracks!!! Gibsons infiltrated the '60s surf world!
An amazing article, just astonishing. SOOOO much new information! (Most of it from Podolor himself!)

Very cool. Killer song! A classic surf tune covered by many and released in '59!
Man, I'm chompin' at the bit to read the article. How extensive is the discography? Does it mention this song by The Daywinds released in 1960 on ARWIN RECORDS owned by Doris Day and husband Marty Melcher?

Very interesting. I always had trouble trying to figure out what kind of guitars he played on all those recordings. I was stumped. Now, going back and listening, it all makes perfect sense.

It's a bit busier than the later Quiet Surf, which in many ways I really like. They're both great in their own ways!
Man, I'm chompin' at the bit to read the article.
I read about 75% of it - really interesting! Extremely well done.
How extensive is the discography?
It only includes the stuff released under Ritchie's various names, not the stuff he played on or wrote, which would be a HUGE list. However, in the article itself it mentions a lot of the more notable sessions he did with various people, though I don't remember seeing anything about the Daywinds. Reading the article one gets the impression that these guys recorded THOUSANDS of hours of music, with hundreds of different artists! Podolor was constantly busy in his studio, either producing, writing (often on the spot!), or playing for various artists. The list of all the stuff they'd done must be just gigantic.
Anyway, thank you VERY MUCH to Dave Burke and Pipeline for this amazing article on Podolor! I never expected this much info would ever be released about him, simply since it hadn't been until now. So, this is just a gift! Thank you!

Just ordered the Richie issue and a couple of others. Pipeline is a real in-depth style magazine/fanzine and really worth checking out. They take PayPal! Be sure to check out the other great articles in their back issues! Go to... http://www.pipelinemag.co.uk/
Their pricing on the back issues is in British pounds but I emailed Alan with the issues I wanted and a price quote and and he emailed me right back.
BTW, The Surfaris recorded a rippin' version of Samoa with awesome Polynesian-syle drumming by Ron Wilson. You can find it on Wipe Out!: The Best of The Surfaris.
