Permalink Surf music fake book?

New Topic
Goto Page: 1 2 Next

Is there any sort of compendium of melodies and chord changes for surf music, like the jazz players have with the Real Books, etc?

This is about as close to a surf fake book as I could find, I can't vouch for it being authentic, either.

http://www.amazon.com/Surf-Guitar-Play-Along-Hal-Leonard/dp/0634073656/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1329493920&sr=1-3

We learned the songs by ear off of the radio and LP's....

Well, there's all these. They do have lots of arrangements of mostly 1'st wave surf tunes. Lots of surfy chord changes. Some have play-along CDs.

This is Noel. Reverb's at maximum an' I'm givin' 'er all she's got.

Never heard of a book like that. I should write one. Here goes:

  1. Em - Am - Em - Bm - Am - Em
  2. Am - Dm - Am - Em - Dm - Am
  3. Gm - Cm - Gm - Dm - Cm - Gm

Sweet!!! Thanks for this now I have something to work with on my new bass Laughing

LOL!! Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin
Perfect. Reminds of a booklet that Ernie Ball put out as a promotion about 20 years ago Entitled "Everything I Know About Guitar", by Ernie Ball....... every page was blank.....

LOL,

I have the chord master books and just shoot for jazz minor's, minors, minor flats, etc... practice as many chords as possible until you find the ones that have that special surfy sound.

I have that one, learned some songs from it and they sound pretty close to the various recordings I have.

I also have this one, got it for christmas.
Says it is "authentic note for note off the original recordings"

The Torquays put out a book. Maybe Duff can tell you where to get one.

He isn't the only one interested in this.

I got it about 10 years ago. Well worth the price for "Twilight at Trestles" and "Trilobyte" alone!

You're not drunk if you can put your socks on while standing.

I have the Torquay book..its very good:

http://www.sheetmusicplus.com/title/Surf-Guitar/3971504

as is the HL book (and not just the Surf version, they have lots of great volumes, including one for The Ventures and one for early rock instros).

I have 2 expensive Japanese import playalongs for the Ventures m(tab with CD). They are as good as it gets and helped me to learn the material. I could be talked into selling one or both, if anyone is interested.

And this is a great place for Hank Marvin tabs and playalongs:
Mustang Music

As you can see, I am a sucker for this kind of stuff and relied on this sort of thing when I was new to surf.

But back to the original post...I wish there was a simple surf fake book. I would be nice to be able to bring a book to jam sessions. I have had plans to make one for myself someday.

One of my other musical interests is gypsy jazz. In that community, a lot of players use "grilles" for the chord changes for songs. It looks more like a table in Excel than sheet music - 1 measure per block. Small enough to fit on a 4x6 card and easy to follow once you get the hang if them. Have any of you used charts like these?

Lots of people call those "Nashville notes": basically chord changes listed out in order they occur. I have a ton of those for surf tunes, they are great.

That's precisely what I'm looking for, dp! Did you find them online somewhere?

Following this with immense interest, and need.

These are chord charts for The Ventures. Is this the sort of thing you mean?

that's great

Tele295 - I was trying hard to learn gypsy jazz guitar before I discovered surf. I have mapped out many tunes using a grille approach. Surf/instro can be a bit of a challenge to chart since the songs often depart from standard AABA...part of its charm, I think. Every try charting Link Wray???

Noel - nice link!
