Permalink Guitarist Desperately Needed For Surf Band Northern Central NJ

New Topic

We were SO CLOSE! The band was really starting to sound good. One of our guitarists was forced to bail because of employment pressures. Damned economy!
We were (are) doing lots of first wave traditional surf as well as a little bit of Straitjackets, and some newer stuff with a bit of rockabilly thrown in for variety.

e-mail me at eric.tolnes@verizon.net

Thanks.
Eric

Hey Eric:
I know exactly how you feel since the same thing happened to my last band. It was all coming together, then a guy had to bail. Different reasons, but same net effect. Try to keep the faith and best of luck on finding a replacement Yes

You're not drunk if you can put your socks on while standing.

Our last guitarist relocated for a better job / more $$$. Couldn't blame him at all, but the show must go on.

We first thought of forging on as a 3 piece but held some auditions and found a great replacement, so have faith!

METEOR IV on reverbnation

Good luck Eric. My paying job causes me to travel a lot in PA, NJ and NY but not enough that it would be realistic to throw my hat in the ring with you and your band. Where in North Central NJ are you located?

Our current rehearsal location is in Scotch Plains. I live on Staten Island.

That's cool. I travel to Brooklyn, West Caldwell, Branchville, Secaucus and Brentwood (on Long Island). The company I work for has customer sites in those cities. Hope the search goes well for you and lets you keep that surf spirit alive an kickin' up there. Best regards...

Haha... I need to move back to NY from CT so I can play in a band again. Western Connecticut (Fairfield County) is a black hole for musicians.

Interesting that you should say that because I've heard that too. Heck the taxes might even be cheaper in NY. I believe the gas is.

This economy is killing recreational persuits of all kinds. I know many good and even great musicians who are so busy working to keep their heads above water financially that they have no time for anything fun.
And those are the ones lucky enough to still have their jobs. The insipid enemy is the pressure that comes when you're "asked" to take on more responsibility at work and you don't dare say "no thanks" for fear of losing your job in this horrible job market.
Those musicians who are still playing have become increasingly mercenary in their attitude toward playing. If a project is not immediately seen as being worth their while money wise, they don't even want to consider it. I admittedly fall into this category to a certain degree. I only have so much time to devote to a project without an immediate payoff.
This was so much better when we did it for nothing but the sheer joy of doing it...

I think you've pretty well summarized what's happening all over the country now. As much as I dearly love to perform, I've got to do what it takes to keep my steady paying job. Your last sentence really hit me since I would play for nothing to keep the art and vibrancy of surf music alive and well.

I know what you mean. Between working 9-10 hours a day and then picking kids up from various activities, I come home, eat dinner and basically go to sleep. I only really get to play my guitar during summer, when there's no ballet, ccd or scouts.

"We're lousy, we can't play. If you wait until you can play, you'll be too old to get up there. We stink, really. But it's great," Johnny Ramone .

FlatRacer, once you find a replacement guitarist, are there enough venues embracing surf music up there to allow you guys to play out and keep active? It's been tough down here finding a lot of surf friendly venues. It seems as if the ebb and flow of the tides duplicate themselves in the availability of places to play. Some years we find few places to play and some years we have more than we can handle. Weird.

No. And yes. I don't care if it's a pool party. I just enjoy playing this stuff.

Play the music and the money will come if thats what you want but keep the music first. That particular band in Central Jersey looking for a guitarist, bassist or keyboardist actually did quite well $-wise and didn't have to drive home at 3:00 AM ALL THE TIME. Trying to compete with cover bands for 3-set gigs in bars is probably not the best business model for a surf/instro band.
For what its worth...

What day is Surf Rock's birthday? Looks like Surf Rock and I was born the same year. Maybe we are both Libras?
