The title of the next Roger Corman movie, you ask? Nope.
I thought it would be cool to pay tribute to some lost, forgotten, or underappreciated gems from the dawn of surf music. We all know the giants, Dick Dale, PJ & The Belairs, Eddie & The Showmen, The Surfaris, The Lively Ones, The Chantays, The Pyramids, The Challengers. These were the groups that had the biggest impact on surf music. In 1963 instrumental surf music exploded on a nationwide level with the hits Pipeline by The Chantays and Wipe Out by The Surfaris.
But what about the teen titans who were there in the trenches from the beginning cutting sometimes only one 45 and disappearing forever? Or what about the pre-surf groups that paved the way on a grassroots level and produced some amazing records that became standards of the genre? This is a salute to them! Feel free to post your favorite!
Let me kick things off with a real surf stomper Ridin’ High by The Revelairs from the South Bay and Ali Baba by Dave & The Customs from Pomona, CA. Enjoy!

Here's a quirky little obscure gem: El Gato by The Chandelles.

Jerry Cole maybe wasn't super obscure, but I think Midnight Surfer is under appreciated.

Cool stuff, Brian! I've always dug Jerry Cole's work and Midnight Surfer is definetly a personal fave!
Here's The Rondels with SATAN'S THEME from 1961. The Challengers were the first to cover this and of course it was also covered by thee mighty Satans Pilgrims, and rightfully so!

I gotta go with The Tradewinds-Gotcha! Something about that beat and lightning fast picking. Jaw dropping stuff!

I love that Tradewinds tune, Gotcha! Pure teenage fury!
Okay, one more from me tonight. CASBAH by Sandy Nelson. This tune is just so damn cool. And written by Richie Podolor too!

"El Gato" rules! Speaking of Richie Podolar ...
— That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

The Vistas' "Moon Relay," found on the Diggin' Out comp that has songs Norm and Brian both linked to already:
— That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

Continuing the space theme, here's The Citations' "Moon Race," available on a comp or two and there's also a killer cover by The Boardwalkers out there:
— That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

I've never understood why Sandy Nelson isn't mentioned more. Even though he had tons of albums full of schlocky covers, I think he's got about the same breadth and signal to noise ratio as the Ventures. I guess there's definitely a drum focus in a genre dominated by guitar.
His recent comeback album Nelsonized is killer all around, hardly seemed noticed.

Yeah I was looking for the Trademarks Baha-Ree-Ba last night also!
For anyone playing catch up, do yourself a favor and get the Surf Creature, Diggin' Out, and Get a Board compilations for lots of great obscure 60's surf. The Sundazed Lost Legends of Surf Guitar series is also great!
Awesome thread!

Glad you guys are diggin' this thread! Great stuff, guys. Keep 'em coming!
I highly recommend those comps that Brain mentioned as well. May I also suggest the Surfer's Mood comps, Wax 'em Down and Strummin' Mental. Pick these up if you don't have them. Most of them are still be in print, but you don't hear them bought up too often these days. They were the rage in the 90's.
Here's another from Kenny and The Fiends with their spooky themed House on Haunted Hill and The Breakers who were from the mid-west doing an equally killer tune, Jet Stream. The Ghastly Ones cut our teeth playing this stuff when we first started. Enjoy!

Totally agreed. Here are a few more favorites, starting with The Treasures' "Minor Chaos," available on Surfin' in the Midwest volume 1.
