You asked and here it is! The Richie Podolor tribute page. Podolor aka Richie Allen is another unsung hero from the dawn of surf. He got his start playing guitar and co-writing the pre-surf hit Teen Beat for Sandy Nelson which influenced early surf music. It was in fact part of Dick Dale’s early set.
He got a deal with Imperial Records with the help of Sandy Nelson and his first minor hit was a surfy sounding guitar instro in 1960 called Stranger from Durango…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ripysJT_Tw&feature=youtu.be
He cut a few more great instro singles as Richie Allen then two albums and singles as RICHIE ALLEN & THE PACIFIC SURFERS released in’63...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=myHZLnbjSmE&feature=youtu.be
He also played on Gary Usher’s Surf Route 101 by THE SUPERSTOCKS one of my all time favorite surf records as some of you probably know…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHBD5wooQ5Y&feature=youtu.be
These records aren't merely studio albums even though session greats played on them. These are cool surf records and Richie actually assembled a live band and shared the bill several times with Dick Dale, even performing AS Dick Dale & the Del Tones when DD couldn’t do the gig! In an interview Richie says he was there when Dick Dale got the Dual Showman from Leo Fender and Dick told him to try it first so he is the first to ever play through a Dual Showman! Crazy stuff.
Podolor also wrote and played guitar on THE GHOULS LP for Gary Usher including this great haunted instro Dracula’s Theme…

Even though hardcore surf fans dig him, Podolor isn’t known best for his great surf recordings. He went on to huge success producing Steppenwolf, Electric Prunes and Iron Butterfly. I haven't been able to find any info online if he's still alive or not. Would love to know.
Feel free to post those great covers from THE PODOLOR TRIBUTE and any other related stuff.
Let’s kick things off with Outerwave doing a fantastic cover of Podolor’s Quiet Surf…

Thanks Norm for properly kicking this thing off.
I didn't know that about Richie filling in the role for Dick at some live shows.I too have noticed that there is a lack of info concerning Richie's career, and his current whereabouts.
Outerwave's cover of "Quiet Surf" was AMAZING!!! That song always gives me goosebumps!

I first began to appreciate Mr. Podolor after getting the Toes on the Nose compilation, which features several Super Stocks and Ghouls tracks. I was really blown away by Voodoo Juice and Quiet Surf.
I also really dig his playing on Sandy Nelson's classic Casbah.

This doesn't seem to be posted here anywhere & probably, alot of You know this. Richie Podolor is the lead guitarist on the "Go, Little Honda" album by the Hondells (Mercury records, 1964). His lead guitar work on "Haulin' Honda" is simply outstanding ! When we were kids & bought this album, we could not believe it ! (We still can't) !!! There are 4 instro's on the album.

Cool stuff! And here’s the tune that kicked of this Podolor discussion in the other thread. A shame the tribute album never saw the light of day. Good stuff! Hopefully more tunes will surface so we can check them out!

Cool thread Norm! Richie Podolor is one of my favorite guitarists from the 60s instro scene. The Secret Samurai covered his arrangement (or guitar arrangement at least) of Haulin' Honda on our latest CD, Zanshin:

Indeed! I'm a huge Hondells fan and those two Podolor instros are killer.
Ryan, your playing on Haulin' Honda is outstanding. Those licks are hard to play!

Thanks Norm! I play it in dropped D tuning. It was Dave's (Klein) idea for me to do a fuzz guitar track near the end. I'm glad he gave that suggestion!
Also, here is my old band's (Surf Report) take on Get up and Go that was supposed to be on the ill fated Podolor tribute CD. I think I only played the overdriven guitar on the bridge section. I can't really remember though haha.

great thread,
Lets get all of the bands that we know of that were going to put a song on the tribute.
Does anybody have a band list?
I remember that it was supposed to be a 2 cd set.
Mel from Golly Gee played me around 15 of the early versions 1 time.

Nice! Great job by The Atomic Mosquitoes on Coffin Nails too.
So far everything I've heard for this tribute album sounds great. Does anyone know why the project was scrapped?

Royalties
The Record company that owned the songs wouldn't give them a discount
and wanted the whole amount per song.
Being that it was going to be a double cd,
just the amount to press enough for the bands, made it cost prohibitive,
let alone, some for public purchase.
Then the Book to come with it(in the cd package) was supposed to be quite big and maybe need a special jewel case.
There was talk of making it on cdrs with some thrown together art, just for the bands involved. But even that never turned out.

The Band I was in for awhile, The Moby Dicks,
did a cover of "Undercurrent" kind if like a Link Wray Rumble song.
I have it around here somewhere on a cdr.

Bummer about the publishing issue. It always comes down to money, doesn't it?
Here's another great track from the Surfer's Slide LP. Real moody. He really had a knack for writting a great melody. This one has a real surf/exotica feel...

The band I was in at the time, The Red Giants, recorded a version of "Untitled Demo #3" by the Superstocks for the tribute. I have it on disc and, if I remember, will upload it to the site when I get home from work. I too was really bummed when the tribute project didnt happen:(
