I thought that this was pretty interesting. The writer makes some really good points.
I live in the 10th biggest city in the USA (San Jose, CA.), and the live music scene here is a wasteland of tribute bands, DJ's and karaoke. I usually go to San Francisco and Santa Cruz for my live music. This article describes a lot of the reasons why (not that SF & S Cruz don't have their club issues, too.)

This was a very good read indeed. I caught it a few days ago. He made very good points. However, there are two sides to this story. Below is a link to a response written to the LA CLUB OWNERS writeup. While I feel that the writer of this couldn't get past his anger enough to actually get the point that the original article made, many good points are made on this end as well.

Thanks for posting the rebuttal, Killbabykill. There will always be two sides to every story. I agree that far too many musicians are absolutely horrible at promoting themselves and working the business side of things. That being said, there are not a lot of venues putting the effort into their side of things either, and many predatory venues that solely take advantage of musicians desperate to play-out. Both the promoter/venue and the band need to do their share in promoting the show, and in being fair and responsible to each other.
