I've got plenty of bad purchases in my library. This is not one of them.
Hey, I'll go one better and tell you what I have, and what I want: El Supernaut Los Twang Marvels El Ray The Coffin Daggers The Aqualads The TomorrowMen The Phantom Four Atomic Mosquitos Los Kahunas The Bambi Molesters The Barbwires Frankie & The Pool Boys The Thunderchiefs The Secret Samurai Madeira The Eliminators Surfer Joe Deadbeats Daikaiju The Anacondas So, looking over my list, we have: I'd say that was a successful compilation, even for the dedicated fan. Steve, check out some of the videos on the BNS website. There are several from Los Kahunas & The Anacondas. The aren't mellow bands, in general. —Site dude - S3 Agent #202 "It starts... when it begins" -- Ralf Kilauea |

I think this is a really amazing CD, in my top 3 of this year for sure. I hope you'll give it a bit more of a shot beyond just this song. The whole CD certainly doesn't all sound like this (though I do love this song personally!). Check out their MySpace page to hear some other tracks from the album, and then decide. I personally think it's most definitely worth putting in the effort to track down this CD.
Again, please don't judge the band just on this track. In fact, they're a high-energy group, and they were quite reluctant to agree to us using this track since they didn't think it represented them very well at all. For example, check out this SG101 thread to see their awesome video for another track from the same CD that Floating Home is on, this one much more representative of the rest of the CD (though it is a highly diverse CD). I just loved Floating Home and from the beginning thought it would make such a cool closer for the comp.
That's incredible, Steve! As I already said, kudos to you! Thank you for supporting the modern surf scene so much.
Great to hear! Thanks. —Ivan Last edited: Dec 16, 2011 11:57:47 |

Oops, I mmissed Steve's comments about Los Kahunas. Yes, Brian's definitely right. A very trad band, but in general definitely not mellow. Ivan |

Regarding Floating Home, this is a beautiful melodic tune that I should have called out before. Evocative of coming in to shore at dusk after the last wave, it reminds me of the theme from Endless Summer without sounding like it. I think Bruce Brown would have used it in that film if he could have. Makes me smile wistfully every time I hear it. I believe it's a perfect tune to end this collection. —This is Noel. I finally tracked down a couple of the CDs I did not have. I will note that some of them are listed at Amazon, but at $40 a whack, I wasn't going to bite. I found The Thunderchiefs and Los Kahunas on eBay, for about $15 each. I tracked down Los Twang Marvels and Barbwires at Raucous Records in the UK, also roughly $15 a crack. Hope this helps someone else with their shopping needs. Steve |

I got mine a couple of weeks ago, and am impressed with the strength of the overall compilation. I really like the Phantom Four track. Everything about it is great: writing playing, tone. musicianship. And its nice to hear some new material from Surfer Joe. He just keeps getting better and better. Definitely one of my fave surf drummers. Thanks for releasing this. Rev —Canadian Surf |

Thanks, Rev, El Twang, wfoguy, and the others! Glad to hear you like it, and glad to hear it's finally getting to everyone. Sean really had his hands very full there for a while, getting the CDs to all the bands that participated (many of whom are outside the US), as well as to all the people that preordered, etc. I believe this has been his fastest-selling release in some time, so that's very encouraging. He also just received the Kickstarter money (finally), and is starting to send out the copies to all the different media outlets. We're hoping many of them will bite. Rev, I totally agree with you about the Phantom Four track - just incredible! So simple, yet so effective, with a deep, deep groove. Those guys have such a unique sound. And Lorenzo's track is I think his best ever - so far, anyway! A great song, and a great performance. Hope you all continue to enjoy it. And may it be the soundtrack of (at least early) 2012 for many people! Happy new year! —Ivan Last edited: Dec 30, 2011 11:46:23 |

Not to make more work for anyone(!) but what if all the bands sent a couple CDs from which their compilation track was taken to be sold on, say, the brave new surf website so they'd be easier to get ahold of? (easier for me, that is). just a thought. —Matt Heaton & the Electric Heaters |

i listened to this a bunch of times driving to florida last week. it's a nice mix of stuff i have and stuff i don't. not a bad one in the bunch and a nice mix of styles. the barbwires tune jumped out as i haven't listened to their cd in awhile and it made me want to listen to the whole thing. same with the los twang marvels. the daikaiju tune caused me to play their entire cd after giving this a listen. i really like compilation cds as they open so many doors to bands i've not yet explored. — |

So last night my wife and I took her dad and step-mother out to dinner. Her step-mom has been at the periphery of show business for thirty years, managing her three daughters who are a vocal trio. When she asked me what was new I played Brave New Surf. She heard most of the record. She'd never heard of surf music or heard any surf music before this. She liked it enough that she's going to introduce it to her grandson who is learning guitar. She told me she wants to get out her guitar and learn it with her grandson too. —This is Noel.
