I'm afraid I'm a certified tube nazi. Practice rig is a '67 Princeton and 63 RI Reverb unit. I've tried early versions of Amplitube and Guitar Rig from Native Instruments. GR has a generic black face Fender emulation that's close and vintage reverb unit effect that's also close, but a/b'd with the real deal they are both very lacking. Great to scratch pad ideas, but I'd be hard pressed to record with them and expect much. You really can't blame the programmers as they are trying to be all things to all people, unfortunately, their are those of us who seem to hear the difference between brass and steel 1/4" jacks, let alone guitars, amps and effects! OK--after talking with stokeman and et. al, i ditched the mustang series amps. i got a new super champ XD on sale and brought it home. tubes you know, sorry about the solidstate DSP but the reverb is decent. now i just read vintagesurfdude's post and i may never buy another solidstate amp again.
sounds much better on the surf settings than the mustang series--at least to me. may be time to get a pro jr. and a hi quality reverb pedal...... Agree

Jeff, It really comes down to what works for you. I'm GASin' (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) for a Dual Showman, but that's not likely, so I do with combo amps. I've been very happy with Silver Face Fenders. There's still bad press on them, but the really bad ones were about the first 6 months of '69 and then really only the Super Reverb's and Twin Reverbs. The later amps with the master gain pots, and after pretty much suck IMHO. But sometimes it's all about budget. I've used a Holy Grail reverb pedal and been pretty happy with it. I've tried the Super Champ in a store, thought it sounded pretty good.

To be honest, I wouldn't use amplitube again for recording a finished product. In my case when I recorded with the von Drats, it was winter and I was living in a small cottage about 4 hours north of Toronto. An hour on the snowmobile before I got to land and then a 4 hour drive down into the city record, and reverse my route. I was in school (sled commute!) as well and had next to no prep time with my showmans and tanks, sitting 5 Hours away! Still happy and impressed with the results.

I'm glad to use amplitube for recording. Most of my recording is done in the wee hours while the wife is sleeping. If I had to wait for a chances to record with an amp, my production would be drastically reduced. I'm sure if you a-b these things there are differences. Luckily, I've never done that.
